| | | A number of years ago I explored two facilities owned and once run by a multi-national defence company. One was probably the most famous industrial abandonment the country has ever seen behind Battersea Power Station - Pyestock. The other was a much more obscure, secretive and far less well known location only a couple of miles from Pyestock, known as the Centre for Human Sciences. This is the third site I have explored from the same defence contractor. It was formed in 1953 and was tasked with research and development of better radar systems, and morphed over time absorbing more arms of military research to become a specialist site for research and development of telecommunication systems, solid state physics, electronics and computer hardware. It also conducted research into cryogenics and fibre optics. One of the main developments at the site was improved Infrared detection for guided missiles and heat seeking devices with other important technologies developed at the site including radar, thermography, liquid crystal displays and speech synthesis programs. The southern portion of this site was closed in 2011, and the company consolidated their work into a smaller area in the northern half. It's absolutely huge, we spent many hours there and saw maybe half of the buildings. A lot of the site is composed of stripped office and work space but there are a few notable areas including a huge building full of laboratories, a partially dismantled anechoic chamber and a completely intact mock-up R4 ROTOR Sector Command Bunker, a four floor military bunker used for coordinating air defence during war scenarios. I had intended to take more exterior shots but by the time we were done we were so hungry we just wanted to get out and find some brunch, so I had to make do with a couple of shoddy ones taken on my phone. 1
