Here is the History: Just received this last evening from the Historical Society

I am a volunteer at the history center. Kathy asked me to respond to your email asking about the Humphreys Hotel. Surprisingly, the history center doesn’t have much information about this once City of Newton icon!

Here is what I found: The original building was built in the early 1900s by Pierce Fuller. It was a very large one-story clapboard home. Sometime before 1921, Dave C. Humphreys purchased the house. He was the County Sheriff. The jail and county court house were conveniently just across the street from his home and family! Sheriff Humphreys was killed in the line of duty in 1932. Mrs. Humphreys was left with little money and seven children to feed. She converted the big house into a hotel by adding a second story. She rented rooms as well as served family-style meals on a large round table with a Lazy Susan in the center. She prepared the meals on a wood-burning stove. She served locals as well as people who came to the city by train. There was a hand pump on the front porch. In the 1960’s the hotel was covered with chicken wire and then sprayed with a material that looked like stucco.

Davenport Pier (California)

And Then There Were Three
by Dee Ashley, on Flickr

Sadly, one of the remaining piers was missing when I came here the last time (which was almost a year ago) I visited this place. It's so awesome, I hate to see what's left if it get swallowed up by the ocean.

When there is tranquility, you are in the right place. When there are no footprints, you are on the right path. When there are no tire tracks, you are on the right road.

This is one of the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen. It looks like my dreams - not even real. Seriously. Awesome.

Give abandonment a reason for its sacrificial reclamation to nature. Love it. Remember it. Take a picture. Share it. Leave the decay to nature.

Wow, thanks!

I try to make it out here every year when I come that way for thanksgiving. This is one of my favorite spots along the coastline.

I lucked out at this location. I actually got caught on the property by the owners but they were very cool and gave me a tour and let me take pictures. I wish that happened more often!

Really like this control panel Dee. Awesome how it looks new on the top and oldand dusty on the bottom. Is that 2 different shots linked together?

It was actually taken in color and I just masked out the black and white on some of the buttons.

Here is the original:
