-Montauk Air Force Station-

Montauk was always considered a prime location for a possible invasion because of its remoteness and prime location midway between two major American cities. In December 1960 the large, high-power AN/FPS-35 radar became operational at Montauk. The reflector was 126 feet (38 m) long and 38 feet (12 m) tall, weighing 40 tons, and was supposedly only the second ever built. It was able to detect airborne objects at distances of well over 200 miles (320 km). The AN/FPS-35 was so powerful that it disrupted local TV and radio broadcasts, and had to be shut down several times and re-calibrated.The Montauk installation was shut down on January 31, 1981. Considering its size, removing the huge antenna was problematic at best so it was "abandoned in place", with its controlling motors and electronics removed, allowing it to move with the wind to prevent it being torn off its base in a storm.

Sweet
Hey I saw a motor...
Looking rather dangerous now.
Wonder how long until it topples?

I remember that the main motor was removed from the inside of the tower. However, from the wikipedia infos, it says it was left with it "allowing it to move with the wind to prevent it being torn off its base in a storm". To be honest i think it is stuck and can't move, that would be dumb to let it move with the wind in case the structure is weak and it fall or anything. :/

That's impressive to say the least! I don't recall seeing this building in a Stranger Things episode, it looks to be about the same era as the experimental laboratory however.

It would be easier to let the wind knock the whole thing down and torch it apart but that wouldn't be safe lol. It sure as hell look big and heavy, makes me wonder how they even built/installed the damn thing!

Where it will fail most likely are the bearings if let to rotate freely; they require routine maintenance. They probably locked it in place.
Doubt it offers much wind resistance and it was engineered to bear it as was the superstructure.

The superstructure ie the building will be the last thing to fail. That's a lot of heavily reinforced concrete sitting there. Those ridges running up the sides are probably steel I or box beams and internal ones as well, a total of 16(?).
That's compression cast concrete, the same they use for building dams maybe with an epoxy additive.
No major cracking or rusts marks would indicate an intact superstructure.
Decades of neglect however eventually will take their toll... that day may still be decades away.

Be hellacool to get inside even if it's an empty shell.

This is pretty cool. I like how the first picture really seems to capture the remoteness of this location.
