Posted by Wizbang Un-effing-believable.... Did you hike up? How long did take? Not that I'll be in Japan anytime soon, if ever. But I am still curious as to the experience that went along with this amazing find. There has to be an adventure that isn't being told here!!! Tell us a story!!

Hey glad you like it! I'll try to tell a story but I'm not a very good storyteller.
I hiked up a ton of different mountains when I was in Japan. I hitch hiked with a japanese couple to this mountain but the usual road up the mountain was closed due to volcanic activity. So I asked the couple politely if they could give me a ride up the old back road to the mountain and they were really nice and gave me a ride all the way there.
Then I hiked up the mountain despite there being a bunch of signs saying it's dangerous and the hiking trail is closed. There was some Australian girls who were doing the same thing so I decided I better try to stick with them since they had a rental car and I needed away to get back to town. This abandoned ropeway was a pleasant surprise since I wasn't planning on finding an abandoned building on the volcano. So I explored it with those Australian girls and then went to the crater with them which was really cool since it was bellowing smoke and sulfuric gas. It was kind of scary too.
So then I got a ride back to town and I camped in the forest that night when the massive Kumamoto earthquake happened, I barely even woke up and fell back asleep and forgot about it. The next day I hitchhiked to Kumamoto city not even knowing what happened last night and I got a ride with an old lady going to go her friend who's house collapsed. There was collapsed buildings and emergency helicopters flying around it was pretty wild.
