Holy S., must be based on the true story we know about here in the forums. One of our members even posted a photo of the girls desiccated remains. I believe it was in Russia somewhere.

The latest Jim Jarmusch film, Only Lovers Left Alive, has some UE elements. Much of the film takes place in Detroit, and there are scenes of Packard and the Michigan Theater.
There are also some shots of the Brush Park neighborhood, and most of the interiors were shot in an old Brush Park house that has since been bought and restored.

One of my favorite movies of all time is The China Syndrome (1979):
Incredibly, this movie came out just months before Three Mile Island, and a few years before Chernobyl.

Kombinat Nadezhdya (2014) aka "Hope factory" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3492714/ trailer: Movie takes place in a closed city which lies in north of Siberia (Russia). City is extremely polluted, environment is destroyed. There is harsh weather - acid rain, storms and extremely cold winters. It used to be a place where one of the GULAG camps were located. Youngest inhabitants of Norilsk desires to leave, they don't want to face hopelessness of predictable life. There are a lot of exciting industrial landscapes in movie. Highly recommend to see it, if you have ever seen photos of Elena Chernyshova Movie was extremely funny and depressing at the same time. I would probably never find about this city if there won't be this movie, Norlisk is isolated from world and interesting from exploring point of view. https://en.wikiped...g/wiki/Closed_city
*** 170Hz (2011) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1825636 trailer: Young deaf-mute couple hangs around abandoned places and they plan how to run away from their parents. They move to an abandoned submarine and girl becomes pregnant. Soon they have a lot of disagreements because her boyfriend wants to control her thoughts, re-writing her diary. This is a weird but very beautiful captured love-story from Netherland which takes place in abandonements.
Movie takes place in abandoned island which is a training target for Soviet air-force. Mute boy is sent to live together with religious old man. They live inside abandoned plane hangar and takes care of horse. They both remembers life before arriving to the island. Old man tells him about ancient Greek poetry which he is reading. Also, beautiful captured movie.
A woman gets marriend with fireman in Pripyat. She losts her husband at her wedding day, 26th April in 1986. At the same day, engineer finds out what's happened in Chernobyl plant and tells his wife and son to move away. He stays in Chernobyl because he is responsible of what's going on. Ten years later, son looks for his father in abandoned Pripyat town. Woman who lost her husband is working as a guide in abandoned Pripyat city, she find peace there and refuses to go to Kiev for a new start. This is a sad movie about fate of Pripyat inhabitants and their lost home and happiness.
Dark fairy-tale alike movie about a scrapper who runs an area of wasteland. Movie takes place in area where are a lot of abandoned houses and hopelessness. A woman works in a strange place to gain money for rent and her son scraps metal in places where he shouldn't do it. Strange and violent movie but atmospheric.

Today i watched "China syndrome", very interesting movie. It makes me think how close every day humans are to any kind of catastrophes, not only atom energy station accidents. Humans rely too much on technologies. Movie kinda predicts that there's a possibility of an accident that can affect not only engineer lives but also anyone who lives in same area. An accident which would be equal to international nuclear event scale number 7 (as in Chernobyl and Fukushima). At that time there wasn't such scale, however, idea is the same - consequences inside and outside station with long-term damage.

Carnival of Souls (1962) is one of the most fantastically eerie movies I have seen, and it also features genuine urban exploration by the female protagonist - in heels, no less!
After Mary Henry miraculously survives a car accident which sees two of her friends killed, she moves to Salt Lake City to take up a position as a church organist. She is immediately drawn to the huge, derelict Saltair Pavilion which she sees lying brooding in the distance outside of town (The movie was written specifically to utilise the building which was genuinely derelict).
During a preliminary recce with the church minister, the following exchange happens: Minister: This used to be quite a place. it's been deserted for a long time now. Mary: Will you take me in? Minister: Why, goodness, no. It isn't safe out there anymore. That's why they put up this barrier. Mary: It would be very easy to step around it. Minister: What attraction could there be for you out there? Mary: I'm not sure. I'm a reasonable person. I don't know. Maybe I want to satisfy myself that the place is nothing more than it appears to be. Would you take me out there? Minister: No. The law has placed it off-limits. Wouldn't be very seemly for a minister to break the law, would it?
Mary, the badass, returns on her own in this wonderfully atmospheric scene here at 0:43:33

The land of hope (2012) Story centers on a fictional atomic electric station's disaster in Japan and how people react to invisible nuclear danger. There are mentioned Fukushima and Chernobyl in movie and also there are some parts of movie that happens in a ghost town or village. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2283017/

Stalker is one that always came to mind for me. The pacing of the movie and how they have to move through the Zone actually reminds me of the kind of deliberate movement through a dangerous site to keep from falling through the floor or something.

Was just going to suggest this one. It moves at a snails pace, it makes 2001 a space odyssey look like crank. But this is absolutely one of my favorite films. Two abandoned hydro electric plants were used in filming, and a abandoned chemical plant, as well as various areas near other active industrial sites such as the Iru power plant, all of this was shot in Estonia.
