| | | so I don't know about anybody else's feelings on this matter, but I really try to avoid damaging a property to gain access, and ESPECIALLY when the building has significant importance to the community. and cue the billa flint house. quick historical blurb, billa flint was a founding father of belleville, became the first police chief in 1838, and went on to become one of the cities first mayors for many years. his house on the banks of the moira river at the mouth of the bay of quinte was, I believe, the first brick home in town, and was once a part of his booming sawmill industry along the river. anyways, the building still stands proud as a reminder of the cities history. residents of belleville love this house, again, one of the reasons I refused to damage it to gain entry. so walking back from a friends after a solid night of drinking, I notice the front door just hanging off its hinges, beckoning me to venture inside. so obviously like an excited 12 year old girl before a one direction concert I drunkenly hurry home, giggling with excitement as I rush to get my camera and tripod. twenty minutes later, not a soul in sight, I slip through the door and seal it properly closed behind me. the silence is almost deafening. after my eyes adjusted to the darkness, my first glance showed me an empty shell and my heart sunk a bit, not from disappointment as I was still excited for the opportunity to be inside, but almost from a sense that I built myself up with suspense wondering for so long, imagining a grand house, eaten away with decay but still revelling in its former beauty. alas, I began to explore. I climbed a ladder up to the second floor, not much to see, nothing really and neither was there on the main floor, or in the basement. I did get some nice shots of the framework and stuff, everything was all original so built before 1838. the best part of this explore was actually the couple minutes that I just sat in silence, thinking, imagining, wondering, and appreciating the history of this home. if walls could only talk then the stories they could tell!!! I was almost able to feel the history circling around me. after maybe half an hour, I decided to call it a night and head home, so I slipped out and propped the door up behind me, making sure to give a thought of thanks to whomever did the dirty work for me and let me sneak in for a few pics. the whole point of the story I guess, as there was nothing crazy to find or no real stories to tell, is that sometimes waiting can be the best bet. if there is a spot you really, really want to check out, sometimes time can be your friend! you never know when a door gets forgotten to be locked, a board gets ripped down, or anything really. those impossible places might be possible, but maybe only one day a year!! that's what I took out of this at least. the chance to see the inside was great and I got excellent photos. happy exploring everyone! :)
