| | Route 66 Ghost Motel & Derailed Train Cars < on 1/9/2014 11:52 PM >
| | | Went on a little road trip to Amboy, CA - a former Route 66 boom town that has seen its population dwindle from 800 to 6 in the last half decade. The town has recently been purchased by the CEO of Juan Pollo Chicken, so it may see better days soon, but for now it is near a ghost town.
The most famous landmark in the town in the old Roy's Motel. The famous sign is still there as are the front buildings. They are completely empty and open for exploration. The back half of the motel is not however, as the caretaker of the town has fenced it off and I saw him walking around back there.

Across the street, there was a church - which was completely locked - and a couple of abandoned dwellings that were pretty much empty (hence the minimalist photographs) except for these yellow chairs that were all over town. A pretty agreeable old fellow - who introduced himself as "town security" - drove up to see if we were doing graffiti, but he was cool with us just taking pictures.

On the drive up we noticed some derailed train cars in the distance and decided to stop by them on the way back. It looks as if these had fallen off the rains and have just been left to disintegrate. The also seem fairly new, which is interesting. There wasn't much in them, but it was still neat to walk around.

| | | Never seen this place posted before. The chairs are nice, seem like something my grandparents would have at their house. The flowers against the white background are interesting as well.

| | | Was this location used in the filming of a horror movie? I can't place my finger on the name of it but it looks awfully like this place. Edit: Yep. "The Hitcher" was filmed here. [last edit 1/10/2014 12:24 AM by Skye_Ann - edited 1 times]

| | | Love the whole set, but number one with the trains for the win! You're right Skye. It was the Hitcher. I remembered it right away. That movie scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. The remake sucked!!! [last edit 1/10/2014 12:35 AM by TRUE - edited 1 times]

| | | Those trains are really awesome, #2 has a nice feeling of emptiness with the clear tracks and sand. Other than the caretaker and the "town security", were there many other people or cars around? Seems like the place an old couple would live and stay in their house all day.
Winning is temporary but looking cool is forever! Stay Fresh! |

| | | Roy's has a café/gas station adjacent to it that is open with a gift shop. There was only one lady there at the counter. Besides that the only other people in town were passerby's on Route 66, who stopped for the bathroom at the café every so often.

| | | Anytime you're out in the desert, if you can get off the interstate and get on old 66, i highly suggest it. Thats where the gems are.
