| | Suvival Buscuits < on 12/4/2013 4:50 AM >
| | | On one of my last explores we ran across these items. I had never seen these before and I was amazed that they were from 1963!! Someone even thought maybe they would try to heat them up by having a fire on them? You can see this in one of the pictures below...

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store. |

| | | The survival supply tub looks interesting to me. Was there anything still in it?

| | | Nope just had to go in the basement, duck through a small hatch, then walk about 50 feet hunched over. Unfortunately there wasn't anything to climb in that building.

| | | Thanks everyone. I thought it was so neat when we came across these. I was curious to know if they were still good a edible but we didn't try any, the thought of eating something 50 years old just didn't have a whole lot of appeal. I think the survival supply tub was still sealed but I didn't look that hard so I'm not sure if there was stuff still in it. Nice pictures DSomms, thanks for sharing those. That bottle of Aspirin from 1962 is really cool!!

| | | I've come across Civil Defense containers before, but never in a volume as large as this. That's quite an excellent find.

| | | A very long time ago when I was young and the cold war was at its height, most of the public buildings would have Civil Defense signs showing the way to where the public could shelter in the event of an attack. Being that our town had a ring of ICBM silos, a major air force base, and a mothballed military aircraft storage, we all figured we were going to be incinerated no matter what. The gov also tested the air raid sirens every Saturday at noon. When I was researching mines in Nevada, I came across some documents and maps that showed which of the old mines were set up as shelters. They indicated the number of people that they thought could be supported as well as the supply stockpile. The mines that we've found don't have supplies any longer. We did find some old water containers in the back of a mine once, but I think they were moved there by the mine owner.

| | | I found these in the Attic of a closed down school. Only a few months older then the ones you found.
Still had all the water containers also. And in great shape. I might have walked off with one to use as a garbage can if the entry wasnt so small for the building.

| | | Oh maaaan! A afternoon discovery like this would be so much better than any apocalyptic movie marathon you could think of. Definitely going to start scrutinizing some of the basements I've otherwise avoided a little harder.
