| | | Founded in the early 1900s. There was a pretty major fire in the 1960s that destroyed many of the structures, but one business or another seems to have been in operation here through the 1990s. Now it appears to be primarily used for storage. 1.
2. Trucks were loaded here. That's a scale running along the side of the building.
3.
4. That's the company safe over on the left.
5. This guy showed up not too long after I arrived and accompanied me for the rest of the time I was there. His dad had worked there in the '40s and '50s. The mural he's pointing to ran around two walls of the office and depicted cotton being planted, harvested, and transported to the mill. It very much reminded me of the WPA murals from the '30s that can still be seen in post offices and other places.
6. More of the mural.
7. Another wall painting that looks like it had been covered up with paneling at some point.
8. Maybe the final time cards.
9. Any idea what this steampunk lookin' thing is?
10.
11.
A couple more on Flickr. Thanks for looking.

| | | Man, you got some wonderful pics there and you are so lucky to have met someone who could show you around and explain the history. I swear to god that wall mural is something that needs to be saved and you need to record some history from that old timer. Nice set, thank you. By the way, that thing in #9 looks much like a cardboard compactor.

Yeah, new camera. Still getting used to it. And yeah, that guy just showed up and stuck with me for the whole time I was there.

Thanks. While I was talking to my companion, I kept thinking, "Damn, this is when I need to be carrying a digital recorder, too!" I kept looking at the mural, thinking that it needs to be preserved somehow but not knowing quite how to accomplish that. I know a couple people that I can ask, though, and I'll put out some feelers to see if there's any interest. I wonder if the contraption in #9 made cotton bales?

Yeah, I think you're right. Makes sense that there would be baling equipment there.

Isn't it? I should've driven my car up onto the pad to see if it still works.
