| | House of 1994 / House of God < on 2/1/2013 6:52 PM >
| | | I saw at least six calendars in this small East TX farm house, all left turned to either August or October 1994. Nature has had 18 years to thrive.
Security is key
First bedroom. Every light fixture had at least one nest in it.
Second bedroom
Wait....
Yep.
Back bedroom. This one was behind a closed door and was emitting a terrible smell. I was a little worried about what I was going to find in there, but it turned out the local wildlife had just been using it as a bathroom for years. I didn't notice it while I was in there, but the walls appear to be coming apart at the seams at the left.
I noticed the top two drawers were full of what looked like berries...
The entire dresser was full of the same mix of shredded clothes, artificial berries and animal crap. Some squirrel or raccoon had made the ultimate nest.
The pile of shredded cloth on the floor of the closet made me think the clothes had literally disintegrated off of the hangers.
Flour after 18 years of humidity?
Canned goods. The only food the rats couldn't get to.
Mount Pleasant Colored Methodist Episcopal Church was built in 1885, and housed the local Fodice school until 1900.
In the cemetery behind the church.

| | | I got the feeling the wig had been left on the hat rack for sentimental reasons. It seemed liked someone had taken the time and care to clean up and put everything in order after the owners left for their last time, then just locked it up and left. 18 yrs ago. Oh but how the rats loved it! I felt the need to run my shoes through the washer afterwards lol.

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store. |

| | | I feel as if these kind of abandoned houses are the most interesting kind. Seeing calenders and stuff left over really makes it seem like time just stopped for it. Very nice I also feel like I need to go shower as well!

I'm not really sure. The historical marker was placed in '98 while the church was still being used. I've been going out to that area for about 6 or 7 years now and the church looked like it was probably used back then, but has had part of the door missing for at least the last 3 years. It's also hard to say because it's not too uncommon for churches in this area to have a second rural church out in the woods where they only meet occasionally for special services, but all the times I've driven by I don't think I've seen anything going on here.

| | | What an awesome find. These are my favorite kind of abandonments, too: where just enough is left behind to tell a story of the former occupants. I liked the little details you captured, such as the turd-covered xmas present to "Daddy" & the bowling trophy on the windowsill. I agree with your assumption that the wig was probably originally perched above only to be disturbed later by some creature or just time itself. Although I imagine the perch's intended purpose was not as a hat rack, but rather a gun rack. This is rural Texas after all. That it was used as a keeper of a cowboy hat and a wig and the cursive "1 pick green tomatoes" makes this a really charming find. Nice job.
Everyone has secrets. It's just a matter of finding out what they are. |

| | | Were those nests active? Surprised you didn't die from either wasp attack or hantavirus after going in there...

Nope, even the wasps had left by that point. Pretty sure all that rat/squirrel/racoon crap was semi-ancient itself. No hantavirus yet, but I definitely wish I had a mask with me on that one. It was a total impulse venture, or I would have been better prepared.
