Long-haired Explorers? (Also, hi there) < on 1/27/2013 7:57 PM >
Not quite my first post, but considering I'm useless with a camera, I'll probably just stick around for conversation instead.
I'm a rookie to more than just the site. While I've had a habit of going where I'm not supposed to throughout my life, I never really thought if it as an exploration thing. Looking back now that I've discovered UER, I realize that's exactly what I've been doing however.
My issue is, however, that I'm a 6'0" male with hair to the small of my back, and there have been a couple of cases in which this has caused me a problem. Cutting it isn't really an option in the near future, so I pose a question: how many others among you are like me, having to work around your own scalp-based dangers for the sake of finding that perfect spot? Have you found any efficient work-arounds?
I typically have my hair in a pony-tail any time I leave the house, simply because it's easier to manage. This is usually advantageous to exploring but if ever my hair happens to get caught on a nail or any other bit of exposed pain, the annoyance of freeing myself becomes a good bit more of a hassle.
Also, hi there. I'm Totentag, a student more of the internet than the outside world. I don't do well around a lot of people, and social prowess isn't exactly in my skill-set. So it would seem that exploration of a land devoid of current life is exactly where I am most comfortable. Abandonment and decay lends itself quite nicely to a bit of quiet meditation or simple relaxation, and I greatly enjoy the utter silence of a good book in an empty warehouse or derelict train station.
I live in a small town in northern South Carolina, populated by twice as many drug addicts as employed adults. As a result, exploration can get a bit "cheeky" at times, though I have learned better than to follow the advice of the tutorial on crackheads/tweakers, considering the majority of them (at least in my area) are no different than what you would expect of a homeless man in a train car. In fact, the two quite often tend to be one in the same.
So I hope I might be welcomed among your community here, if even with little more than a quiet glance over the shoulder and a sense of non-threatening avoidance.
Also, ignore the discontinuity of this thread. TL;DR's are always a bit awkward when they fall out of my keyboard.

I dunno, what do women do with long hair in sports? Mostly of the women I see doing exploration things have shorter hair than you. I suppose the longest hair I've seen exploring (That wasn't a ridiculous wig) was just past shoulder length. In other words, I think most people cut their hair shorter to avoid just this problem.
Get a hairnet, tuck it into your shirt, wear a speedo swim cap (With goggles, of course), cut the hair, or live with it. I guess you could learn to braid ponytails? In the meantime, make sure you have a knife to free yourself form bad tangles. I guess you'll either hang onto the hair, cut it off all at once, or bit by bit.
I'm going to guess that the long hair is extremely important to you? But it's going to be in the way of moving around sketchy areas.
Edit: Welcome to UER. I was in the Raleigh area and there's some good guys there. Do some good stuff. [last edit 1/27/2013 8:23 PM by AnAppleSnail - edited 1 times] Achievement Unlocked

Get one of those giant dredlock hats and just kinda pile it up there.
My hair is down to my shoulders so I don't really have too much issue...but bushes are another thing. My handicap is knowing that certain entry points are going to be more physically painful and much slower than if I had short hair. Man...one of my first explores was a state hospital enclosed in thorn bushes. And I was wearing a fancy wool coat for some reason
As for exploring...I always find the different mindsets on it fascinating. Some people go for the energy of the buildings. Some people push themselves because the rush of the risks is their high. And some people just love the photos they produce. http://www.flickr....irdlingphotography

My hair used to be pretty long, and I just learned to braid it or do fancyface wrap-y stuff. Obviously a guy can't really do that and maintain his masculinity, so... I suggest rocking a hat or something. Pull it into a ponytail and pile it underneath a baseball cap or some other hat. Wear a hoodie with the hood up? A male friend of mine with similar length hair just kind of lets it be--he says apparently it doesn't get in the way for him, or he knows how to avoid a situation where it might be bothersome. But to each his own--I'd just recommend a nice hat and a ponytail.

As I was reading your post I thought you were talking about the fact that your every day Jo Blow would think you look suss because of long hair and that Jo Blow would ignore someone with short hair.
You could try some chemotherapy and then the decision is out of your hands. [last edit 1/28/2013 1:27 AM by Dougo - edited 1 times] FacialBook is killing online forums.

I have hair down to the middle of my back..in all the years I've been exploring, its never been a problem. If it is, tie it back, tuck it in, wear a hat...you'll figure it out..

This might not be an option for you, but whenever I explore in a cave or somewhere that my long hair might pose a problem I put my hair in a bun. Also, hoods are great. ~Asher

Lol!
Depends on what you're doing; I got my (above shoulder-length, tied back) hair caught in a brake rack during a rappelling descent into a sinkhole - very painful.

Yep! Have to be REALLY careful with any descending device. Although I pray I never have to use it, I carry an assisted opening pocket knife every time I go on rope for just such a circumstance. I always tie my hair back but have still had a few close calls.
If long hair is really an issue, do what some of the bikers do. Use more than one hair tie along the length of your pony tail.

Pretty much where I was at with it. What do you do anytime you do anything with it? For fucks sake. Don't explore. Yes, srsly (to those who wonder if hair could possibly pose a hindrance).
I tried using my keys - no go. Had to be helped by a friend, who quickly rigged and descended a parallel line. Will have a pocket-knife on hand in future for similar situations.

??? My hair is waist length and I just put it up in a ponytail, or wrap it up in a bun... But, even with it down, I have never had an issue with it getting "in the way"... Although, I have gotten it shut in car doors and sucked up in seat belts... XOXO!!!

I used to have hair that hung to about half way down my back at one point. I'd put a black hair tie on it about every 6" (the no-metal kind) and then tuck it inside my shirt.
They also make those ponytail covers that enclose a whole section of a ponytail so that stuff can't snag on it (or so you can look hip, or whatever)
When hiking in cooler weather I used to have this thing that was basically a hoodie made out of tshirt material. Was great for long hair cuz you could put the hood up and tuck your hair down inside the shirt, and especially with a hat over that, nothing would grab your hair.
These days I'm usually bald, but I've found that with having a long goatee it's similar but different problems. I got my goatee caught in my ATS descent device while out canyoneering. Kinda painful. Also had the most difficult time trying to tie a necktie the last time cuz it kept jutting down into the knot! Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)

My hair has been an issue when dealing with certain government employees encountered while exploring, but never exploring itself. I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.
