| A quick trip to Hudson Psych entry by Drie 8/22/2004 11:58 PM
| I'm going to try and do a better job of documenting my explorations. For someone who explores a few times a week, I just don't do enough write ups. Could be i'm lazy, could be I dont have a whole lot of free time. Anyway, I'm gonna try and be better about it. So, on that note... After a horrible morning spent at the Gap, where I work, at a ridiculously stupid meeting about "fitting rooms", (um, who the fuck cares?) I headed out to Mid-Hudson Psych with Subcon to hang out in the rec building for a while, and do some tunneling. I think that basically I just had to explore today or I would die or something. I woke up all "must be in abandonment now" for some reason. We all have those days. Could be that the NEUEA folk were headed to NoHo, and I had to work. That really pissed me off, since it was technically my "Day Off". The Gap sucks more and more every day. Anyway...Subcon hadn't ever been before, Unless you count a brief run in with security a few years ago, so it was kind of fun to show him around. The flip side of that is when I'm exploring with someone who hasnt seen someplace before, I tend to take really lousy pictures. Not sure why, but it's the way it is. I'll have to head out for a solo trip there soon so I can show you all what it's like inside. We started out in the rec building. I really like that building because it's so clean and neat. It's like everyone just left for lunch or something. The one sign of vandalism is a smashed piece of glass that separates an office from a hallway. I assume this is probably because this is sort of a hard building to get into. I owe the Cereal Trespassers for being able to get in to this one. I swear those guys are the kings and queens of in. We wandered around in there for a bit, and I stopped for a while, like I usually do, just to listen to the way the building sounds. It has some serious water damage going on in a few places, so it has this weird drippy sound that comes from everywhere all at once. I spent some time exploring the rooms that had "people things" left in them. As Subcon said, "there's no shortage of outdated technology here!" Microfilm readers, record players, slide show projectors and ancient computers must breed there or something. What made that so cool was that all of it was in perfect shape. Some of it wasn't even dusty. It's like a late 80's technological time capsule. Among the more interesting things inside that were not tech related was some kind of block puzzle, in what looked like a trumpet case. I've been in quite a few psychs, but I've never seen anything like it before. Anyone know what it was used for? I can guess, but if anyone has a good answer, i'd love to hear it. We also found an entire box filled with blank traffic tickets. Strange. There's also a room that used to be a thrift store, so we spent a while looking through some ugly clothes and weird self help books. The only decent shot I took all day came from the auditorium in that building. After that, we headed back out to hit the tunnels. The kirkbride here is a really amazing place. My favorite kind of abandonments are the ones that are basically falling down, and this building is certainly doing that. In some places, you can see where the floors have fallen down three stories, and the center of the building sports an impressive collapse two floors high. The light in this building was pretty incredible. I'd like to spend a while there alone, but thats probably not the best idea. Its got serious "get hurt or die here" potential. You never know if the floor your walking on is safe. We walked around in here just kind of enjoying the fact that the building was is so old and majestic. It has beautiful windows, and beautiful archways. I wish they still built things with respect to beauty. The decay makes it even better in this case, because the peeling paint reveals layers of those lovely Psych colors, pink, green and blue. It looks kind of like clouds, in some ways. We headed out after that, concluding our visit by leaving something for 'snows, which he'll hopefully find on his next trip out. Not the most exciting day, but fun. Here's some pics:
