| | Please criticize and say things < on 8/24/2012 10:31 PM >
| | | I have been a long time follower but just recently registered and had a few pics I was hoping to get some direction on. They are both HDR shot with canon t2i w/50mm. I travel a lot for work and plan on taking camera wherever i go so I would like to get some constructive criticism before I take and process too many bad photos. I was shooting manual and just by memory I thing I was set at ISO 100, f11?, 50mm. Bracketing +/-2. Thanks

| | | Compositionally good but OMFG MY EYES!

| | | Please dial down the HDR, local contrast included (actually, especially).

| | | Yeah the HDR is killing these, but on the other hand, I really like the composition in the second one! Its a neat perspective

| | | 1. Not straight. The subject matter gets lost in the background Absolutely no need to use HDR
2. Composition is very distracting (my eye doesn't know where to go) Too sharp colors are strange.
HDR should only be used when the range from dark to light exceeds the capability of your sensor/film, and manual blending is not an option.
Not a bad start though.

| | | Thanks for the input. I think what I'm hearing is more HDR and contrast! No just kidding.
I going to try the same pics with very little processing to see if I can hopefully end up somewhere between the two. I personal find this version a little more boring although more authentic. I would really like some input on what I could do with them from here and I promise not to post rev 3 but use your criticism in my future pics. Thanks again. 1.

| | | These are MUCH better. I see you cropped a little tighter and straightened the first one. Also the color works WAY better in the second one. You see how now your eye goes straight through the hole and concentrates on the yellow chair? Much much better.

| | | I agree with adv. pack. In the second batch of edits the first photo is great. Try not to use HDR as a way to make your photos less "boring" take an interesting photo and then use it like icing on the cake. Just a little goes a loooooong way. Remember that in real life your eyes see shadows and highlights so you don't want to lose either one of those things in your photos. I think pretty much everyone goes overboard with it in the beginning. I like the subject matter of the second one but I think of the 2, the first one is shot and edited better (in the second batch).

| | | Just from looking through some older posts I see you guys have to deal with HDR abuse with most of the new people looking for input. It was nice to see everyone dealt with tactfully and encouraged to continue shooting. I am going to start shooting RAW and try out new 10-22mm lens and I look forward to getting advise on my next set.

HDR is risky business on this site... I use it 90% of the time. Probably the reason I don't have a ton of posts on this site. You will always get hassled for it and ridiculed but you have to remember, people can't hate you for shooting the way you want! If you like how your HDR pictures look, then keep doing them. There is also always room for improvement whether you have been shooting for 1 year or 20 years so you should still be open to "constructive criticism". The "my eyes are burning" line will get thrown around plenty and are just there to be laughed at. Shooting RAW should be a great step for you. Even if you don't know "how to use" it properly yet, it will allow you to go back a year from now and re work it. Happy shooting!

| | | For me personally I found the best way for my HDRs to come out were to do them so subtly that most people couldn't tell they were HDR until I told them. Eventually it became too challenging to hide what they were...I could no longer tolerate the issues and went back to bracketing.

| | | If you're using photoshop, don't go DIRECTLY to HDR.....there's Sooooo many tools in photoshop you can use to tweak your photos. Exposure, curves, levels, etc.....HDR really should only be used to pull details out of shadows you just can't get with any other means or if you're designing the cover for a video game featuring drifting or the apocalypse. If you're not using photoshop, then carry on.....nothing to see here.
