| | Mystery Abandandoned Airport < on 3/19/2012 11:38 PM >
| | | Anyone know anything about an old airfield southwest of DFW abandoned in the 90's? All my research points to it being a Lockheed RCS test facility. There is not much out there about it. There are rumors of an underground and it doesn't seem to be monitored or very publicized. Its in the middle of nowhere and has a 6000ft main runway and a smaller supporting runway. Have had my eyes on it for a while but wondered if anyone has anymore info on it?

| | | Are you talking about Great Southwest that was closed in the 70s to make way for DFW. Part of the runway still exists on airport property at the north end of Amon Carter blvd. http://www.airfiel...X/Airfields_TX.htm I didn't see anything on that sight that rang a bell with me, but it does list other airports that I remember seeing and driving past back in the day.

| | | No. This is not listed on that site at all. I have had that bookmarked for ages. Love that site. This is much south west. I am not going to openly post where it is because as far as I know it is unexplored. But keep an eye on your messages.

| | | Nothing. All you see is a nearby ranch airfield. This is not tied to the ranch. This definitely a government facility as indicated by the no trespassing signs and the fact there is a guard house.

| | | The Army Air Core used to have a place out there, I believe it used to be owned by the Confederate Air Force before they were caught running drugs.

| | | I have now seen the OP's research and support his findings, very nice work this one even if not a full mystery is a little known site for sure. (not even the CAF knows about this one)

| | | Yes, not so much a mystery anymore. I dug deep and found the answer from a deep web search. However, the research indicates this is probably not that secure of a location anymore and it is definitely not very well known. I give this with some details removed:
Developed as a Stealth Radar Range by Lockheed Martin in the 1980's this unique facility had been used for testing stealth technologies during the Reagan administrations. Deep inside the 2,800 acres were two separate runways, a large paint booth and several other buildings used for storage and hanger space for the model planes. A high security area, the property had been officially closed down and mothballed for sale. **** purchased the facility turnkey, including all of the equipment, office furniture and rolling stock used by the closed facility, and re-developed the property for uses more conducive to the rural Texas countryside. Today, most of the property has returned to supporting an abundant wildlife population native to the region and is also enjoyed by many different users for recreational and retreat purposes, as well as a few small businesses. |
Looking at historical imagery back to 95 suggests that it is not continually populated. Hopefully can have some actual photographs soon but for now here is a pic of the site from current Google imagery.

| | | The UFO folks dont think it is abandoned, they think it went to a deeper shadow company. They are a skittish lot though.

| | | I don't think you would find much underground, may be some basements but that's about it. Basically what they did was run reflectivity tests to see how well different materials and configurations worked in deflecting radar images using 1/8 and 1/4 scales of the plane. You had to have top secret clearance to access the site. It was only in full operation for about 5 or six years. There should also be several radar towers, not big ones, scattered around the site. Just as interesting is the group that bought it!

Now you are starting to sound like the UFO folks! It does seem like a rather bogus company. Someone speculated that the test stand might retract into the ground to hide from the spy sats as other ones do.

we think alike, repurposing the property for "recreational use", more conducive to central TX etc etc? deer lease? theyve added some "fishing ponds" how bout an ATV cycle ranch? how much to join up? I looked at some of their other acquisitions and Im ruling out the UFO thing but it does seem like an offbeat sort of business model for a realtor

| | | my dad was a Lockheed exec in Fort Worth. Yes, that is definitely the old stealth test radar range they set up back in the 80's. The best thing about it is that it is a part of the aviation history of this area. Kinda boring there, and from what my dad told me, the security out there can be real assholes if they catch you out there.
