| | Floating mist train tunnel < on 4/1/2012 8:56 PM >
| | | As you approach this tunnel even on the hottest day, you feel a extreme temperature drop before you even enter the tunnel, and a cool floating mist An engineering marvel, built a decade before the invention of dynamite, yup. These dudes used nothing but hand drills and black powder to drill through the blue ridge mountains. 1.
2.
3.
4.
Funny how these last two look like crazy HDR, but in reality it was just the ambient light that leaked from the entrance of the tunnel.

| | | Love Crozet Tunnel so much. The original tunnel met in the center less than 6 inches off. When they built Blue Ridge tunnel in the 1950s right next to it with "modern" engineering tools, it was something like 3 or 4 feet off. It's too bad you can't walk all the way through Oh and great job with those last two shots. Thats over a quarter mile to the concrete wall there folks

| | | Now does this tunnel run all the way through or is it blocked off? There is a similar tunnel near to where i live but it has a few inches of water in it and the same sort of mist sometimes, my fear is bad air since this tunnel has had a cave in at some point.

Naw they tried to turn the center into a gasometer, so theres two giant concrete walls in the center. You can crawl through a tiny pipe with water in the bottom, but it's not worth it to me. And the air is probably super shitty in-between the two walls. The tunnel itself is almost a mile long

The tunnel has good airflow - the air is just fine all the way through. Halfway between the walls, the echos are amazing.

| | | Im not sure if the tunnel im looking at has good air, its got a few inches of semi running water in it so my best guess was that it was good. Are there any ways to tell besides oxygen detectors?

If the air is moving, you're good. If it's not moving, then you may have a problem.

Now I kinda want to buck up and crawl to the center. How long is it from wall to wall?

Maybe half a mile??? The opposite wall is fairly close to the other entrance.
