| | Route 66 < on 1/5/2012 12:40 AM >
| | | Hi all. Long time lurker, recent member, and now first posting. Went last year on a cruise starting in Dallas to the Texas portion of Route 66 with some car buddies. We did a little exploring of some of the locations. I know it isn't technically "Urban" exploring, but nevertheless. We took as close to the original route as possible now using old maps and guides so we went by many older areas. I have tons of pics but will only post the relevant ones. First up is an old Theater. Didn't see a way in and the few locals in the downtown were watching. The exterior had been remodeled to look better but it we clearly falling apart on the inside.
Around the side was an old bus and an old WWII(best guess) Savings Bond painting.
Also in the downtown were several abandoned stores.
Through out the whole trip we ran into abandoned service stations and repair shops. This one had some stuff hanging on the walls in the office area but the service bays were burned out and the roof had collapsed.
Further down the road was an old Super 66 gas and service station. It was partially restored but just the exterior and front room.
It was filled with all sorts of old stuff. Mostly from the 60s and 70s. Lots of 8-tracks, hubcaps, bottles, etc.
Behind the Super 66 was an old feed store also filled with old relics. Next up was Bug Ranch. Its been mostly abandoned since about 2000. Lots of other abandoned buildings and stuff here but didn't get pictures of them.
Behind the old Longhorn Trading Post, where Bug Ranch is, there is an old Chevy sitting under a Texaco awning.
Now, for you road fans, I managed to track down a little segment of the original 66. Long since realigned and repurposed.
Next is an abandoned court motel. Evidence suggests occasional squatter use. The main office has actually been renovated in to a small coffee shop that is still open.
Up next is an old gas station. It was a small, small two story structure. The owner/operator and his wife lived upstairs while it was in operation. It has been completely restored minus the second floor that had rotted and removed. We got lucky there was an event going on in the surrounding park. They had the building open so I was able to get some inside shots of what is sealed and only visible from windows.
Last up is an old cafe. Looks like it maybe lasted until the 90's. Some evidence of previous vandalism.
That's all I got for now. Hope to actually get out and meet some of you that are here in the DFW area. [last edit 1/5/2012 2:40 AM by Flavortext03 - edited 1 times]

| | | This place is so stereotypical of the south but it makes me kind of sad because it probably all had a beautiful hay day at one point.

| | | I love the gas pump in #12 and bug ranch. when my wife and I did our cross country trip a few years ago we totally forgot about bug ranch. We remembered it when we were over 100 miles away. Route 66 road trips are so much fun. Envious of you guys.
Dont want to wake up with no one beside me Dont want to take up with nobody new Dont want nobody coming by without calling first Dont want nothing to do with you. |

Oh there was so much beauty still along the route. I can only imagine it back in the day. Here are some other non exploring pictures we took showcasing some of the beauty still remaining.
