Yes. I do it all the time too. So after the first 4 paragraphs hating on the boat:
"If Rodrigues doesn't move the Kalakala by January 1, he faces more than $32,000 in fines per day. That is forcing him to consider something he hoped he'd never have to -- slapping a for sale sign on his beloved boat. "It's up for sale for $1," said Rodrigues. But there are strings, or perhaps more appropriately, an anchor attached. For that dollar, you promise to restore the Kalakala and not sell it for scrap. If you have a bit more money, Rodrigues has a bit more of a plan. He's looking for private investors with deep pockets. "One million dollars will save this ship forever," he said. For that million dollars, Rodrigues said he has a long term home for the Kalakala, a plan and a partnership that will return the boat to its former glory. Other proposals range from $5 million to almost $50 million. But right now, the most precious commodity is time. Sink or swim for the Kalakala.Says Rodrigues, "People, we have a treasure. Let's save it. Let's protect it.""
I think the best comment from King 5 is this one: Mark-Mark said on December 5, 2011 at 10:52 PMThe Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) should buy it, and then dock it next to their new museum in the Armory building on Lake Union. Then they should expand into it, and it can be a museum itself, with a museum within. [last edit 12/7/2011 8:21 AM by Louie - edited 1 times]

I think the reason they couldn't do that is because it would just simply cost too much today to build a ship in the same art deco style that they used back then. So that isn't really an option. It is apparently an engineering marvel, even for our time.

| | | I guess we'd have to really look at figures.. I wonder what estimates would be for building a new one.. I remember reading about the restoration efforts of the SS UnitedStates and it was concluded that restoring it to operational cruise ship operation would cost less than just building a new ship.. Trying to retro fit modern engines and safety features into old vessels like that is not easy.. Thats why the queen mary is a hotel and nobody built a titanic II. -Tom

| | | The new owner has been give until June 18th to have it out of the waterway in Tacoma. Though it sounds as if there is a chance that it may wind up in the Hudson River in New York. This author compared it to the loss of the Sonics. http://blog.seattl...a-sold-for-a-buck/

| | | Did anyone else see the Times article about the Kalakala starting to sink? I guess the wind storms this week blew it into a barge and it is listing and starting to take on water. The Army Corps of Engineers has been enlisted to help.

| | | Looks like she refuses to go down without a fight! High tide lifted her off the barge and she FLOATS! "Ferry Kalakala no longer listing; not source of sheen Posted by Nick Provenza on January 24, 2012 at 3:14 PM The Associated Press TACOMA – The Kalakala is no longer listing and wasn’t responsible for a sheen at the Port of Tacoma, but the Coast Guard and Corps of Engineers are still keeping an eye on the historic ferry as a hazard to navigation. Coast Guard Petty Officer Nathan Bradshaw says inspectors checked out a sheen on the Hylebos Waterway on Monday and determined it was not coming from the Kalakala. The Coast Guard continues to monitor the vessel. Corps spokesman Bill Dowell says high tide apparently lifted the Kalakala off a sunken barge and it’s no longer listing. He says the corps likely won’t step in unless something catastrophic happens. Once the pride of Puget Sound, the 77-year-old streamlined ferry has been parked in Tacoma for six years, waiting for restoration."
