| | | Did any of you ever write to one of the companies that sell this stuff and ask for a discount or so because we would use these things for a private hobby.

| | | They might, though saying you are a student would work better. BUT the discount would probably be through their (overpriced) website and no better than through a reseller. Ebay is the best bet for stuff like this.

| | | good ideas here: student and ebay. i ask for samples, not for ue but it has gotten me free brake pads for my drag bike, leather gloves, a gas grill, and some other stuff. racing has its perks, winning has more. ue, not so much. [last edit 11/15/2011 6:04 AM by cdevon - edited 1 times]

Ain't going to happen, but never hurts to try. They aren't that expensive.

| | | Gotta figure what type of gas your trying to detect....... there are many monitors out there for many things. I have a monitor on me regularly due to my profession, but find really no use for it in exploration. The only time I would recommend taking that extra step is if you are in some type of chemical processing facility/ plant, or going anywhere underground where heavy gases can settle or oxygen levels being low. But unless your going to fork out a shit ton of money on detection equipment that covers all possible situations, then you are best to tackle that issue as needed. The gas detection companies are like any other company, if you aren't offering them a good reason on how it could benefit them to give you hand outs, then there really is no reason for them to even think about it. Now if UE ever become some sort of sport, you can ask for sponsorship

But not in harmful amounts. Need low lying area, or next to some open source such as an active well or tank setting. I am actually out there a few times a year at my regional office and its pretty flat so it will disperse easily. But if that is the concern you can pick up a disposable H2S Monitor that is good for 24 months for roughly $140 ( Just picked up a bunch last week lol )

Active well? Yeah we have a bunch of them around here, even in the middle of towns. Hey do you see one of the ones you picked up last week half price used?

| | | By active I mean open, with work being performed on the well. And West Texas has the wells spread to far apart to have any real accumulation problem to monitor. Here is a link to the detector I put on my guys, and its pretty much going rate. http://www.amazon....=1321393778&sr=8-1 But I do think you are really over thinking the hazard unless you plan on exploring the middle of one of our fields.......
(Not my pic)

Not so. There are many sour wells in some areas of W TX. People have died just driving down a road. If you live in these areas it's not a bad idea. H2S is an insidious poison, not an ideal war gas, but it has been used as such.

Totally on a research mission now to find a case like this, cause I do not buy that one at all other than the case of someone driving onto a well site that has a leak. If in a traffic area that leak would have to be of a huge and I mean huge amount in order to not be tossed about by the traffic flow, not to mention to have not been ignited causing an explosion at that point. Keep in mind just because you smell H2S doesnt mean anything, you can work for hours upon hours in an area where you smell h2s, that is common. I actually just now got through teaching a class in h2s safety and rescue operations. If you want to be real safe, fly out here and I can fit test you and train you in use of an SCBA, then have no worries hehehehe [last edit 11/15/2011 10:49 PM by SinCalRyder - edited 1 times]
