| | Rookie needs advice on a lens < on 9/12/2011 4:52 PM >
| | | So I've been lurking around a while like most rookies do. I posted a picture in the Mid-Atlantic board a while ago, but I haven't had much luck on places in SMIB country. Fortunately, I'm moving back to Denver with my wife and we're going to Glenwood Springs to celebrate our anniversary. I want to make a detour or two along the way, but I need a new telephoto lens for my Sony A100. All I have is the stock setup. Can anyone recommend any good, inexpensive ($150.00 max) lenses out there? If this is in the wrong forum, I apologize. Like I said, I'm a rookie. Thanks!

| | | I've been using some sigma lenses recently... like them so far. There s a 75-300 sigma which is used by someone i know. I hear it does the job. At some point I used the "Big Beercan" by minolta (pretty cheap) but it was pretty bad.

| | | If the alphas use the same mount that they use too, then you could look at old minolta lenses. I'm pretty sure there are some cheap minolta telephotos on ebay.

| | | would a lens from a SLR mount to a DSLR? Obviously I know different brands have different mounts, but say an old Sony SLR lens to my Sony A100 DSLR.

In general it depends on the register distance and whether anyone has made an adapter for the particular lens type you want to mount. Canon DSLRs have the widest range of lens mount adapter available but there should be plenty for Sony A mount DSLRs too. Try searching on eBay for Sony Alpha and whatever type of lens you want to mount. I'm sure M42 mount adapters would be available and those are pretty widely used. In addition to the Pentax Takumars already mentioned, Vivitar, Soligor, and other brands were made with M42 mounts. Also T mount or T2 mount adapters should be available. I may be wrong but I don't think there is such as thing as a non-digital Sony SLR. I believe Sony bought out Minolta and just rebaded their Alpha line of DSLRs. So you could look for Minolta Maxxum SLR lenses. I believe the Minolta A mount is not compatible with the older and more common Minolta SR mount, so you'd have to be careful to avoid the Minolta lenses from the 1980s (or older).

| | | Use your stock lens. It can work magic if you know how to work your camera. The lens isn't the magic. You are. It's all about your eye. If you make it happen with a shotty set up you can make it happen with anything.

| | | he wants a telephoto lens. No photographer, no matter how badass they are can turn a kit 18-55 lens into a telephoto, just by being awesomesauce. Craigslist also usually has some great deals. I shoot Canon, but there are always tons of good deals on Sony stuff on there that I see. Plus most Craigslist ad prices arent set in stone. I have always been able to knock a few bucks off there. I got a 50mm 1.8 recently for $40 on CL. Amazon is good too for some stuff, but you have to trust that it will be in good shape. With CL you can meet up in a busy area and try out the lens.
Blah Blah Blah. Shut up and open the damn door. "It's ok Officer, I watch a lot of cop shows on tv, so i am practically one of you guys." - sadly, that didn't work. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jonno23/ All my photos suck. |

There rant really old Sony SLRs ( that would be old Minolta SLRsm since they bought them), but otherwise yes. Just be careful that there are to Minolta mounts, the old manual focus and the newer auto focus. My friend had an adapter when he was shooting with his Minolta DSLRs, but I have no idea how well it worked, so better stick to a AF lens. As already noted, I would suggest you watch craigslist, the have a lot of stuff there. You should have no problem finding an inexpensive 70-300 lens, quality can be not bad, but since there are almost a million different out there, it's a bit hard to say exactly what one you should get. There are several photo stores in the Denver area, and what I remember from my vist, a they had eir fair share of Minolta/Sony lenses too. You can go there and try them, if they are ok and have a good price tag on them, get them, otherwise you know what to look for on craigslist.

For my two cents, If you're shooting indoors and not too much outside, I use my 50mm Prime and 28-80mm most of the time in these places. A 80-300 is really more of an overkill unless you are shooting inside of a big place. I use my 70-300 and my 500 mm more outside then I do inside. There is not much that a 28-80 could not handle in these places, to worry about a larger lens. At least that is my two cents worth.

Agreed. I have a 75-200 I rarely take out of my bag.
