| | Ticks < on 7/8/2011 4:03 PM >
| | | After going out exploring some old buildings in the woods yesterday, I realized that with all the overgrown brush and trees everywhere it was highly likely to get ticks. I also found a large tick on my head, which luckily hadn't yet bitten me by the time I found it and got it off. It seems most bug repellents don't work for ticks, are there any that do? Is there anything else to do to try to protect yourself against ticks and/or other bloodsucking creatures?

| | | I've had damn good luck with plain old DeepvWoods Off, but you live in a different part of the country. The military issue stuff seems to work well also. Might try a surplus store.
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

| | | Rubber bands around the ankles help too. They also have sell 100% DEET. I don't think its made by OFF though. Also lets not forget ideas of how to remove them if you do get them. Yes matches work but do you really want to burn yourself. Also... (copied this of course) Please keep in mind any remedies such as vaseline, hot matches, nail polish remover, etc- could actually make things worse. Anything that might cause 'shock' to the tick could result in the tick purging (that's the same as vomiting) the contents of its body into your bloodstream, infecting you with any number of diseases. Please just safely and quickly remove the tick with tweezers, cleanse the bite and watch for the symptoms of tick related sickness.

| | | That's news to me. Where did you copy and paste that from? I remember reading in Field&Stream magazine that petroleum jelly was the single safest and most effective way to remove ticks from both yourself and your hunting dogs. (Of course that was 20 years ago. )They breath through their exoskeletons and a glob of PJ would make that difficult or impossible to do, so they back their heads out and try to crawl to the surface. Then you just flick em off. I never heard of ticks purging, but I guess I could see how that could be a consideration. The CDC recomends pulling em out with a good pair of tweezers and rinsing with alcohol, iodine, or soap and water. [last edit 7/8/2011 8:58 PM by phractal - edited 1 times]

I'm currently having to deal with lyme disease testing, which is caught from a tick and I'd have to say I'd rather be arrested by the police and fall through a floor at the same time. This is utter hell. They put me on penicillin which I'm allergic too and am now covered head to toe in hives. On top of that having to give them Vials of my blood for testing then I still wont know for at least a week. This has been ongoing for a good month now.

| | | I've never had any repellents stop ticks, and i've basically spent half of my summers in a woods infested with them. Best bet is to wear jeans, avoid trails and brushing up against bushes in the 2-5 foot range, and to give yourself a full body check that night to see if any have latched on. They're mostly harmless for the first 24 hours that they're attached.... if longer, the likelihood of getting Lyme's Disease goes up significantly. Also, a tick will drive itself deeper into your skin the longer it's in, and after the first 3 days or so they're damn hard to get out. You'll want to pull the whole tick, and not snap it off at the neck. Best bet is to grab it as low as possible and give it a yank (any home remedies I've ever tried have never really worked). If you do leave pieces behind... I tend to get out a fingernail clippers and just remove the small amount of skin around whatever is left of the tick. No worse than a scratch, and you don't have to worry about getting lyme's disease. But for mosquitoes, the 100% Deet works wonders. The only time I've ever seen it sold (outside of old bottles of military grade stuff) is at the checkout counters during the summer. Comes in a little pump spray bottle, good for just keeping in a backpack... stuff works wonders.

| | | For my work (biologist) I hike through woods and tall grass everyday... and besides DEET, the best thing I've found for ticks is khaki pants. Seriously. Light colored pants will let you see ticks crawling up your legs long before they have a chance to get inside your clothes and bite you.

| | | Nasty little buggers. As people have said, wear long pants, tuck your pants into your socks to keep them from getting to your legs. Ive found that that works best. Once you are out of the brush, check yourself. You may be able to get them off before they reach the vein they want to leech from.
