| | | Has anyone ever been to Vishnu Springs by Tennessee, IL? I'm planning a trip and was wondering if the hotel was open/if there are any houses left. (If you haven't heard of it http://en.wikipedi...iki/Vishnu_Springs,_Illinois its has a lot of history behind it, and the whole ghost town bit is a plus)

| | | i havent been there. but did alot of researching about it like a year ago. no houses are left, the hotel still stands. but is in bad shape. there's no real sign there was ever a town there. and at this time of the year, whatever small signs you would be able to find are overgrown. if you ever do make the trip, give me a heads up. i might just join you. its a pretty long walk on foot to get to it, so keep that in mind also. i think its like a 2 mile walk.
~Quote By Thomas Edison~ I have far more respect for the person with a single idea who gets there than for the person with a thousand ideas who does nothing.... |

| | | Be very very carful and plan/ scout it out well. The university owns it now and there are many different people that go down there daily. last year alone there were over 50 people arrested there for trespassing (according to a friend of mine that works for the states attorney). There are many different ways to get there other than the road that goes to it that goes right in front of the neighbors house. Last time I was there the hotel was boarded up pretty well and they were working on the outside of the structure repairing it. There is quite a few little things left from the town around the area you just have to know what to look for. The cover to the spring is buried in gravel now as well for safety reasons according to the professor that I was talking to about it. You may have good luck talking to some geo professors to get access out there safely. Best of luck I had a blast scouting it out and planning the trip there.

| | | Country exp, I thought that it was a nature preserve (Or was at some point) But I understand the 50 arrested, there was a lot of vandalism from the photos I saw. Do you remember if it was posted no tresspasing?

| | | The only building that stands is the hotel and its boarded up really good. I went there with my GF that graduated from WIU last year. She was writing a final at the time on Visnu and got permission to go on the property with a professor. I remember hearing about alot of students getting arrested for just trespassing so I'd be careful. Nearby neighbors keep a close on the gated entrance. Not sure what they have done with the property since, but last I heard WIU was going to fix up the hotel and turn the land into a park.

| | | I went in 08 twice when i was a student at WIU. It was really awesome. There is a turnaround, use common sense and don't park there. Don't park anywhere near it. Park your car a mile down the road from it, leave a note on it that says, "Will return with tools/Alternator and hike in, or have someone drop you off and use 2 way radio's when you are ready to be picked up, you will NOT have a cell phone signal down in the valley. There are Three houses in the area, if you see anyone outside, just keep driving they will alert the authorities if they see you. I hear they prosecute trespassers, but it IS worth the risk. Camoflage yourself, wear brown and green, blend in, whatever, i think its a $400 ticket. We were able to get inside, and up to the third floor (Used to be a ballroom?) where we hung out for a couple of hours. It is in rough shape, but the whole building seems structurally sound. Watch your step on the second floor though, there are a couple of holes. It is truly a shame, it has been severely vandalized by frats over the years, some of the graffiti was fun though, because it is literally DECADES worth of students leaving their marks. There are also penciled in signatures from people who appear to have treated it with respect, there was a makeshift guest list on the wall of one bedroom. It is very EERIE at first sight, it kind of looms out of the woods, and then you find yourself in a pleasant, serene valley. A creek used to flow RIGHT through the house, through the foundation and there is still a well in the basement. It was said that the water from the springs could heal people... I wouldnt drink the black stuff in that well though. I would definitely watch out for squatters, If i were homeless, I'd move right in.
