| | | Using garbage bags for draining deep water < on 3/27/2011 7:28 PM >
| | | Has anyone tried this? I've been thinking about trying this out with some long elastics to waterproof our legs, but I'm wondering about a couple cons of using these. For one, it seems like they will compromise foot grip. And two, it seems like they would be readily prone to wearing through and ripping while being walked on. I got the idea from reading the Drains entry in the UER Encyclopedia, and I'm just looking for some advice from people who have tried it.

| | | If you're not going very far, and the bottom is sandy you might have a chance. Hit up the local Big 5 for a decent tall pair of wading boots and you'll be a heck of a lot happier.

| | | I've had friends who have worn the big 3mil contractor bags on the inside of regular height rain boots. It worked out well enough for them.

| | | If it's that important to you to stay dry use something more reliable than garbage bags. That said if you have a lot of duct tape you can make some ghetto waders.

| | | It doesn't work very well at all. Don't be afraid of a little water. Bring dry clothes. Change.

Like Loki said, garbage bags plus duct tape will sorta work. But for 20$ a set of hip / chest waders are worth it. Plus the keep you from flooding when you slide an unexpected extra 8" down into drain-muck.

| | | Bring an extra pair of shoes and pants to wear if you don't have waders. Garbage bags don't work well, even for short distances. [last edit 3/28/2011 5:18 AM by willskith - edited 1 times]

That'll rot your brain Don't cut corners. Bite the bullet and buy waders, best investment you will ever make for draining.

I agree. But if you do decide to use the bags, you're probably best off wearing them inside some cheap rubber rain boots so they don't break or slip.

| | | I know one person who tried it. It worked for all of 15 seconds. The funny thing is they will retain water a lot better than keeping water out once breeched.

| | | There is a big difference between garbage bags and the heavy contractor garbage bags. I used the contractor bags to wander around a reservoir and they worked fine. They're a little cumbersome, but so are waders.

Any home improvement store will carry them. Generally 50 or 60 gallon bags referred to as 'contractor bags' and for job site cleanup or yard work. And they indicate the thickness on the box like '5 mil'. [last edit 4/8/2011 9:47 PM by CatalogOfCulture - edited 1 times]

| | | I've tried using garbage bags for draining. I wouldn't recommend it unless you like sliding around and risking your life. I got tired of them and just got my feet wet, which really gets old after a while. Boots or waders are the way to go.

| | | I've had some good success lately by sticking my bare foot in a good, brand name garbage bag, like a hefty, then putting a tall hiking sock on over that, then the boot on over the sock, and using a rubber band to seal the top below the knee with some duct tape for good measure.

That's closer to what I had in mind when I made this thread. Too bad it's no concern of mine anymore. I caved and bought hip waders from Dick's for $45 last week.

I once tried this by duct-taping large garbage bags on my feet (one each). The distance I was hoping to cover with these was only less than 20 meters, but it did not work. This cost me basically brand new 300 € phone (which was in my trouser pocket - dumbass me).
