| | BB & CMH Present: Silver Maple by Henry Hopkins < on 2/4/2011 8:42 PM >
| | | Another Lovely home that Craven and I visited one Sunny, snowy day... No wonder I was drawn to it - the original builder was a Veterinarian! Enjoy and if you have more historical data, I'd love to hear about it! The property was first owned by Mr. Henry Hopkins, a veterinary surgeon who came from Scotland in 1862. He called the property "Silver Maple", and built the first (smaller) section of the house in 1866, a very charming little 1 1/2 story house of board-and-batten construction. An old hitching-post still standing at the front suggests that he used this house for part of his practice. The second and larger part, constructed of vertical boards, was added in 1880 (as evidenced by the date, August 4, 1880, found written under the floor boards!!!). The house was then owned by Mr. J. E. Brass, until today where it is now a Historical House on the famed Pickering Airport property. More on Henry: Henry was born in Stirlingshire, Scotland on July 9, 1839. Henry died Nov. 12, 1909. He was 70 years old which is fantastic for those times. He is buried in the Green River Baptist Church Cemetery which was originally formed in the late 1830's by Hopkins's neighbors. The Church was later moved and renovated, only to be closed in 1979 for the Airport grounds. Henry's beloved wife Mary Ann Madill (Hopkins) was born in 1843 (no month day avail) sadly died March 27, 1878 - She was only 35 years old. From research it looks like they had a son Arthur who died at 14 years old. Also buried with mom and dad.
Address: Private Type: House with Extension and work shed (added later) Status: Heritage house (approved 2008) Recommendation: Definitely see it if you are in the area! Security Measures: security patrol, uphill walk in the winter... Historical dates: 1866 Equipment: Gloves, camera, mask, long pants Hazards: Exposed Insulation, debris on main floor Accessibility: Easy Features: Beautiful stone fireplace, hardwood floor (with dates carved in!), interesting paint and a ban full of vintage Sunshine girls. 1. Addition in 1880
2. Original Photo from 1866
3. Toilet with wood seat - classy!
4. Front today (err...recently...)
5. Inside the addition - workshop area)
6. Looked like an outhouse, but when opened it lead down to a door that lead into the original part of the house.
7. Searching for the spatula!
8. Breezeway
9. China Cabinet with China!
10. Family room with fireplace
11. Master Bedroom with his and her closets! This was a smart man!
12. Stairs with no railing.
13. Creepy painting in 2nd bedroom
14. 3rd bedroom had a LOCK on the outside...no one inside

| | | I found Henry's headstone today! The cemetery was a wealth of information on the forefathers of Pickering, Altona and surrounding areas. Very cool. Sadly some stones were damaged, fallen or weathered beyond help, but I found Henry's and it is as magnificent as his house! 1.

| | | Once again my intrepid UE partner posts some great photos! I love the black and white images.....and the contrast of the tombstones against the white snow. The trees top it off.... Beautifully eerie...

| | | Thanks! Oddly enough, my mommy has an Ancestry.com membership, so I was able to verify a lot of data on there. Then I looked up the cemetery and it has a website. Sadly, the town does not maintain the grounds....it was in rough shape.

This is a neat little place. Thanks for the pics and history. It's nice knowing some info about these older goodies.
And maybe we should all save up and get Craven one of these for this birthday? He can just toss it down the steps, hit the switch.. and then in the words of the late Price Is Right announcer Rod Roddy.. cravenmorehead.. come on down. [last edit 3/8/2011 10:08 PM by Mr. "D" - edited 1 times]

| | | Photo #6 in the first set is of this outhouse looking room, but when you opened the door, it led down 3 steps to another door - that led to the scary ass basement. This is where Craven peed himself. I ran to the China cabinet and had an imaginary Tea party to make the bad thoughts go away... there's no place like home.....

I prefer the term "urinary incontinence" see definition below: "Is any involuntary leakage of urine. It is a common and distressing problem, which may have a profound impact on quality of life." don't even get me started on my other problem......fecal incontinence. It's amazing BeerBunny still hangs out with me.
