While Hunting for Linux maping software I ran across a datasource that is rather interesting. the national Atlas map layers wharehouse.

the url is http://nationalatlas.gov/atlasftp.html

some of the more interesting map layers includes.

Coal Fields of the United States, Dams, EPA Envirofacts Data and Hydrologic Unit Boundaries.

cancer mortality?! Wouldn't the high areas simply be where there are bigger concentrations of people?
