| | | Light-up pens for UE? < on 5/11/2004 7:47 PM >
| | | I just found one of those light-up pens while cleaning my room and started think ing of the possibilities it might have while UEing. The one I have has a single red LED, and the top half unscrews so it can be used as a mini-flashlight and a pen seperately. I know it wouldnt be a very useful main light source, but for scouting or even as an emergency light source, it seems like itd be pretty invaluable(and last time i checked, theres nothing incriminating about carrying a pen around in your pocket.) Not to mention the fact that their pretty cheap can be found just about anywhere(i got mine at a car show from a saturn rep). So, has anyone ever actually used one while UEing or scouting?

| | | I have on numerous ocassions actually. It's an extremely handy item, that doesn't make people ask "why do you carry a flashlight everywhere?". I've also explored tunnels with just the light of the AF Illuminator on my camera too, but I tend to not use much light, so that may be why I don't mind the small amount of light from the pen led...

| | | I take my LED pen most places. It's a good secondary light, and also a pen. Ninj http://www.infiltration.org

| | | When I upgraded the battery on my CellPhone I got one with a built in high brightness LED. It is about as powerfull as a micro maglite (Serious!) and has come in very handy on UE trips and out and about. Chris...
We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit. |

| | | I never though of using a pen, I have used my cell phone for light a bunch of times. It puts out a lot more light then any pen light ive ever seen. I used the auto focus on my camera a few times too when people left me behind with no flashlight while I was busy taking pics. I usually carry a mini mag in my pocketbook anyway.

| | | A pen light with a single red LED? I dont think that will help that much, red LED's arent all that bright.

You have to realize there are many needs from lights. Not every light needs to be blinding. A red LED will preserve your nightvision in a dark area, which is hugely beneficial at times. As well, you should check out the RED LED lights from streamlight, they are surprisingly strong.

| | | I BOUGHT a litle frashlight from some store and in one side it has a blinking red light and in the other one, a utra bright light. So I turn the blinking on while exploring and if I have to change the battery on my big frashlight then I use the smaller one to iluminate the area while changing.

| | | You know, I know you guys don't get as into the whole stealthy sneaking aspect of UE as much as I do. But there are times when a dim red led is the only acceptable choice. I find dim red lights more useful in my typical practice than any other.

| | | I've used the LCD on my camera numerous times to find my way around dark places. I do have one of those pens laying around so I'll keep that in mind, thanks. I was going to go out and by some maglite filters but I'll give that a try. I like have a low light source as most everything I carry is just too bright.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too! |

| | | I like the little circular keychain LED lights. I also have a green laser pointer that looks pretty close to a pen, it's useful for judging distance in tunnels, etc.
