Honestly, even if it was going to be "saved", a "fluke" would happen and it would burn down. Seems to be what happens to heritage sites. A place can sit there for 30 years, without being burnt down, yet when a developer says they'll protect a place out of the goodness of their hearts, they seem to mysteriously burn down. Weird coincidence how that tends to work out, leaving the owner/developer "no choice" but to redevelop the site...

It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.

I would agree with you for most developers. I've personally met this guy, Marc Williams, and I wouldn't characterize him as the typical soul-less developer. I believe he was sincere when he told me about his vision for the properties that he assembled there. He had done some nice work in the neighbourhood (Koret Lofts) and this project wasn't exactly a huge money maker, it was really a restoration in exchange for development space somewhere else in the City. Restoration in a neighbourhood that sorely needed it.

As for a fire, it's a very real possibility given the neighbourhood. The fire that caused the firefighters to cut the original hole in the roof was caused by the mutants in the Regent Hotel throwing burning stuff and garbage out the windows onto the theatre roof. I know there are regular fires on the roof of the buildings beside the Balmoral Hotel as well - same cause. After a 3 week summer heat wave, things will be in a very precarious state.

Barring a miracle, the theatre is toast. 100+ years of history. Such a shame too, as it was a real gem that a lot of Vancouver is still not aware of.

Trying counts, and several people made noble efforts. Damn sad though their efforts didn't pay off. The death knell was probably to not stabilize it, and at least prevent the roof leaking when it was first discovered. To just stop the leak, would have bought time, and barring other major mistakes could have saved it by greatly reducing the damage, and cost to restore.

To think a hole from a dropped parking meter decided the fate of this building is pretty effed up. Most likely numerous factors, but that may have been a key problem. The leaking roof was not fixed quickly.

Actually, I believe it likely still could be saved, but of course would 'cost too much' to warrant the effort.

I met Ms. Hlavach years ago over the attempt to save the Georgia Medical Dental Building. (Which after trying to save we watched from the Hotel Vancouver deck being imploded). She was/is awesome and should be given much more authority on heritage matters.

The developer actually spent several tens of thousands of dollars fixing the roof at different occasions throughout the process. Unfortunately with neighbours like the ones at the Regent Hotel, this is sometimes a task that requires daily attention.

The actual parking meter incident was perpetrated by a single lunatic that threw the parking meter off the Regent Hotel onto the Pantages roof, then climbed out and started to smash the parking meter thru the roof deck of the Pantages. Unfortunately, the roof is graded towards the alley and all the water from the entire roof is directed toward the side of the roof where the hole is. That side happens to have the stage, and sub-basement on that side of the building - the water just collects in the basement and rots - everything.

Yes, at this point it would take Jimmy Pattison'esque deep pockets to save her.

The whole DTES is a disaster. None are spared.... Sad to see her go. I would really like to have seen her in her glory. Thanks for the very intimate updates Dog.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

Hey KAPS sorry for making you wait to pick me up. When I went to the DTES on Saturday to check out the place I bought a cinnamon bun from the grocery store that is right beside the theater.

I've been shitting nothing but water since Sunday morning, as well as vomiting, and wishing I were dead. I thought I would be able to manage going to the theater today but I decided it would be better if I went to the doctor instead.

Are you going to go back on a later date? I'm feeling slightly better but I still feel like shit.

Oh man, don't EVER eat ANYTHING from ANY store in the 100 block East Hastings. Actually, very few places that are safe - I would, however, recommend the Ovaltine Cafe in the 200 East.

Some nice pics from this guy's flickr account. They've moved a lot of the ornate plasterwork to safety and uncovered a lot of the original wallpaper and detail:
