| | cleveland thermal steam tunnel access! < on 6/4/2010 10:59 PM >
| | | the cleveland thermal steam tunnels have been a dream of mine for years. they go everywhere, multiple levels of grates and ladders all the way from the lake to south of the terminal tower. if anyone is familiar with it. there was a way in that popped up a month ago. and i got to step in and take a quick look around. i want to go back if they havent fixed the problem yet. would anyone else have the same interest and want to check it out. or has anyone else ever got in?

That... is a really incredible synopsis!

| | | That's one of my dreams, to explore that whole underground network. I took the Veteran's Memorial Bridge tour a couple years back; what a tease that tour is! You can see there is TONS more, but it's all roped off and usually people standing by to keep you from wandering off the path. Plus, from what I've heard and seen, a good portion of that is heavily flooded, almost to the point where quite a bit could not only be inaccessible, but rather dangerous. Still.... would be quite an adventure. Perhaps if I get a chance to get down there again and not be saddled with 100 family obligations, I'll make some time go take a peek again. I'd even go back for another chance at the freebie tour, it was rather interesting stuff.
dsankt: In fact, the day I die yall are welcome to form an orderly queue and run a train on my eye sockets. I'll be dead and frankly, will not give a f*ck. budda: That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Fuck me sideways this is insane. ~~~~~~ Because it's Cincinnati |

They're doing another tour in July. I was lucky enough to have gotten in in 1988 before they had tours. The building at the corner of W. 25th and Detroit was an apartment building that had burned, though not much, two years earlier and was abandoned, so we were able to see both of them. The subway station had shops and all sorts of stuff in it. Sadly, I didn't take any pics. My one friend was so scared he wanted me to hold his hand. The flooded part is just a featureless tunnel that goes from one side of the tracks to the other. All it is is concrete and white tile. I told my grandmother about it later and she said she used to ride the streetcar up 25th st. all the time and go through the tunnels. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Well, that and getting married, having kids, etc. Life changing. [last edit 6/14/2010 2:13 PM by splumer - edited 1 times]

Oh ok, I didn't know the flooded part was only that. From the looks of things at the east end of the bridge, it looks like the part that would continue under (and supposedly) to Terminal Tower looked rather damp, if not partially flooded. (seen, somewhat, in this picture here: http://i99.photobu...ridge/100_3124.jpg ) I heard a rumor (I think it came from the Scene magazine article a few years back) that there were storefronts under there. So it is true! http://s99.photobu...veterans%20bridge/ Here's the rest of the pictures I got, most of them are iffy as I only had a crappy point-and-shoot with me that day.
*EDIT* This is one of the other flooded areas I mentioned, I think this just led to a hallway or area where you could go from one side to the other without crossing the tracks: http://i99.photobu...ridge/100_3016.jpg [last edit 6/15/2010 2:32 AM by jellybeans95 - edited 1 times]

| | | Actually, I'm even surprised that that one tunnel is flooded, since the whole tunnel system is at a fairly high elevation. Dampness, yeah, but everything in Cleveland is damp. I suspect that one tunnel just filled with rainwater and was never pumped out. I'm planning on taking the tour, so maybe I'll ask them. | | | I think the story I heard (my ever-inquiring mind NEEDED to know!) was that some of the lower areas were flooded due to an underground natural spring. This area that I showed the photo of (the second flooded area) was under where the tour takes you...another level lower than where the subway tracks are/were. I wonder if I can get down to Ohio for that weekend... I would LOVE to take that tour again with a bit more time (last year we arrived an hour before they were closing) and a better camera. You get to see just enough to tease, but it's worth the trip and you can't beat the price.
