| | Old Mine Tunnels under Downtown Edmonton? < on 4/22/2010 11:58 PM >
| | | So, I am sitting around the dinner table two sundays ago with my father and his father, and I decided to ask about the rumours of old mine shafts and tunnels under downtown. To my surprise, my grandfather spilled into a story of tunnels and shafts under Edmonton, that he and his friends explored when they were kids. Thats a long time ago, but I was thinking that these tunnels may still be there..... Now I know what your thinking, every city has stories like this.... They couldn't possibly exist..... or could they? If anyone knows of these mine shafts or tunnels, they are probably long gone and in the earth by now. Maybe they told someone about an entrance. Now I know that down in the pedway, in the LRT stations, there are vast retail spaces, boarded up and waiting for businesses. There may be a way in down there somewhere, but to this day, after all of my explorations, my efforts have been fruitless. Maybe someone out there possesses this knowledge I seek. Maybe these rumours I have heard are just that. Maybe the mine shafts have been filled. Or, Maybe, Just Maybe, there is a treasure trove of caverns and tunnels under downtown E-Town waiting to be discovered again. Anybody heard these rumours too? | | | I have some old topo maps of Edmonton, from the 60s or 70s, and they still have the location of about half a dozen abandoned mines around Edmonton.

DUDE!!!! I knew it. I wonder if these places are worth checking out. I mean, it may be impossible to get into them anymore, but it is worth a look. My buddy told me of another drain, this one is on the north side between 97st and 82st I think. I am thinking there may be a way into the water tank under Grand Trunk. ?????

Depends on how badly you want to uncover the tunnel rumour.

Hang out with E-Town's homeless folks. If there are secure safe places that get them out of the weather during the winter months, you can be sure they know something about these tunnels.

| | | Oh! I remember reading something about this in another thread. And apparently there's an abandoned mining entrance in riverbend by Promontory Point. There's a lightly beaten foot path leading off the road into the ravine by the bank somewhere, and by there is a mining shaft. I haven't been there but i've been wanting to chase this lead for a little while now. Anyone else heard of this one too?

Well I only wanted to focus my energies on the world class drainage system we have here in Edmonton. I guess I have let you down. When I get back I will check out the leads on this one. It would be cool to find these, I just got caught up in doing the 5100!

No...you haven't let me down. But really...drainage systems versus tunnels (or the search of) is a no-brainer. Damned-near anyone with a flashlight and a pair of hip-waders can do the drain thing with relative success. Researching, finding, accessing previously unknown tunnel systems is a different kettle of fish, and the rewards are far greater.
