| | | It is a shame. We have the same issues in the US, concerning marine life and the use of sonar. Being a sonar technician, I have to deal with this stuff all the time. The sonar of concern is medium frequency active sonar, in the 10 - 30 kilohertz range, and is very infrequently used (except of course, in the huge amounts of training evolutions the Navy does). The more used variant (high frequency active) is proven to be harmless to marine life.....which is fortunate, because we use this type of active to sense the ocean bottom (and calculate depth), sense vessels above us when coming to periscope depth, and many other things. It's invaluable in preventing collisions and other accidents. Whoa......didn't mean to give a class there. Sorry for rambling.

| | | Very cool info Sigfather, thanks for that. The CF Maritime Experimental and Test Ranges are primarily for torpedo testing, both deployment, and detection. They do use Mid frequency active sonar, and often. While the US has laws regarding use in marine habitat, it seems Canada has little or none. Unlike the US (correct me if I'm wrong), Canada uses this Mid Frequency Active Sonar as it's operational sonar, all the time, in all situations, at mid power. Canada is a pioneer in using active sonar at various frequencies in towed array systems, and very actively continues to research, test, and deploy these systems. The future is here, with all our new technology, there must be another way that doesn't harm life that hasn't waged any wars with us...ever.

| | | That's pretty wild, SteamPunk. I had no idea Canada was working on using active in a towed body system......from a professional standpoint, my mind is boggling at how active in a towed array would look. Using medium frequency active at all times, though......that just sounds like bad news, especially from an ecological standpoint. Hopefully, the current wave of reforms with sonar employment that have happened here in the US will make their way up north, as well.

| | | Canada uses a system that both the CF and General Dynamic's Canada have developed. The "Towed Integrated Active Sonar Project" uses both passive and active sonar components. The system does have an "Option" for low frequency, but the system core uses mid frequency, and a horizontal projector at the front of the array. Edits... I don't know a lot about this, it's just something I have been looking into after seeing so many warships training around here. I have a radio background, both hobby, and commercial radio systems in the public sector. Living on the coast, lots of boating. Having to time your sailing trips to avoid the training areas during training hours is a bitch.

| | | Yes, in traditional submarine speak, it is indeed a boat. Although in todays "new Navy", everyone says "ship". Apparently, they're technically long enough now to be referred to as ships......although most of my shipmates still say "the boat", etc.
