| | | | Rappelling into 200 ft silos < on 2/6/2010 4:19 AM >
| | | http://www.youtube...atch?v=37_9LYlgvMs I went to this location that a lot of you might recognize from MAMU II and rappelled down into the big silos. That's the only way to get down into the bottom. I've been planning this trip for about 6 months, gradually building up with more knowledge and experience and equipment for rope work. If you go down this ~200 ft descent and then can't ascend, you're screwed because there is no other way out. I went with two other experienced climbers and all three of us tried it. The video of them didn't come out as clear though. We had an awesome group of 5 non-UER explorers that night and it was such a fun trip. We spent about 5 hours playing with rope in a location that normally only takes about an hour to explore. I also did some fun stuff with rope in the same location a few days earlier with MindHacker and his friend Jerm (not Germ, it's a different person) so hopefully they'll contribute more pictures and videos from that endeavor. It's cone shaped at the bottom and pretty steep. At the center of the cone is a nasty, fine grain powder. So basically there is nowhere you can stand up or even sit or lay down comfortably. So you just flail around uselessly while hanging from the rope. But I enjoyed launching myself off of one wall and into the other with all my strength and then being bounced around like a rag doll. (maybe I had had too much caffeine...)

| | | That commentary makes it. I'll look through my pics when I get a chance. I have no time, since I've been doing snow-removal for a news station in DC. On the flip side, I now have enough disposable income that I'm going to get a pair of real ascenders and a rack, then teach myself to do an aussie rap. Silos wouldn't be a bad place to try, with such a soft landing down at the bottom. Eww....

That's the main reason I gave up and cut all mine off.
Anyways, here's the only image of you that really came out:

| | | LOL great video =) I liked that narration as well. I love that part "snap a picture" and all you can see is a little pinpoint of light at the bottom. Good stuff man, looks like a fun rappel. The ascent's gotta be crappy though. =P
Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =) |
