dont want to jump the gun on him and steal his thunder, so i'll just post this bit, the '79 type IV engine has '79 only heads and exhaust system, and all of those parts are stupid money. if it hasnt been converted yet, the cheapest/best route is to go with '78 or earlier heads and a '74 exhaust system. i have more to add but ill let bandi weigh-in on it first.

I did not.
I've always wanted a VW van but after inspecting this one quickly, not knowing much about them to be honest, I see this isn't the body style i want, so I let it go.

i don't much like the type IV engine in the '72 and up. they're more powerful and reliable when built right and properly maintained, but much more vulnerable to entropy and far more difficult and expensive to repair/build/maintain than the upright beetle engine found in '71 and earlier models. the '72 was unfortunate to be the first year of the type IV engine but without benefit of the upper access hatch that didn't come until the following year.
