They do tend to get rather abused.

i am a GM guy, but it was BONEHEADED idea to put that transmission in that car knowing full well that a car like that was going to get gut punched on a regular basis. And then, after they fail, NOT warrantying a legitimate break.

the Jetta had issues with the 5speed if I remember right... i couldn't find one that didn't have reverse blown out of it when I went to help Bickle fix his 98 Jetta GT

Yep. My bro had a '98 Jetta and I had an '88 at one point. Reverse was gone in both of them.
