Someone mentioned the French. I have a little exeprience with Renault cars and well Renault now is pretty solid as an automaker. They used be kind of the lauging stock of European cars for the longest time and it wasn't until after the AMC purchase they realized what was going on. Now they make some great lightweight bodies.

Now, Honda used to have the attitude that Toyota has now but they backed off once they realized what it was doing to them. Now Honda is like Nissan and Subaru where they play up their strenghs.

numbers do lie.... you can skew data any way you like and after seeing cars in 'real world' situations, JD Power doesn't mean dick. What the fuck is the first 60 days of ownership? The car is still smelling factory new and hasn't nearly had the stuffing beat out of it yet. I see these cars at service shops and dealer service areas and they have some pretty catastrophic failures... what about the AWD Matrix and Vibes that are having rear diff failures... for no apparent reason?

I NEVER look at any of these so called reliability report bs. I look on forums. I look in junkyards. You know what I see people bitch about that pisses me off the most? Maint. items. The shocks were bad at 100k miles. Ya think. Or even better that 20 yo Cavalier rides rough. Do some fuckin maint. If I hear someone bitch they had to replace the trans at a 150k but never changed the fluid I'm gonna throttle em.

I'm not saying initial quality reports are the only metric to measure with. I agree, first 60 days....big deal. Also agreed, data can be skewed to read however you want it. I'm still confident... that companies that are responsible for reliability and quality data, readily available for the public, product and publish fair and true numbers. These aren't fly by nighters, and with public scrutiny and access to information laws.... I just don't see how they could feed incorrect information to the public that often, for that long and get away with it. I've been in business long enough that it's fair to say, dirty business players get what they deserve

and toyota has been a clean player? they dumped their cars here during the 80's... just dumped them and took cheap shots at the domestic manufacturers. It has taken a long time for the domestics to get their shit together, granted, but now, sorry, that Toyota looks awful staid and homely next to some of the new offerings from Ford and GM.

what kills me is the marketing campaigns... they [toyota] make it sound like their car will someone mystically tickle your nuts, make you popular with greenpeace and get you invited to plaid-wearing family gatherings. Hell, their so called "Tacoma" tough ad, using footage from Top Gear, was of a truck that wasn't even offered here. The diesel HiLux was never offered here... but there they are passing it off as if it were.

I have never had a real beef with any car company. That said toyota does seem to act like its exhaust don't stink. They act like the Prius will save the world and that their products never die. I have owned a couple yotas. Not bad for what they are but not some uber impressive run forever magic either. I have driven a prius. I had to see what the fus was about. Its junk. Gutless ill handling trash. And the people who buy them are arrogant assholes who sneer at me and my gas guzzler jeep. I tell ya what. Let's take the cheapest domestic vehicle (built here, not a rebage) and the best toyota (hell even lexus) and run em in a loop from maine to florida to cali to washington and back to main again. I would put my money on the domestic offering being more reliable, better equiped to deal with our nations roads, and in the end cheaper to run.

I think in this day and age, the quality and reliability for the most part of all the automakers now are one step from each other in varying degrees and you really can't go wrong in the end with a car from any of them.

With that said, my main irk with any manufacturer is any of them have an attitude that their product is some sort of god. Toyota is the current winner of this tittle; and I previously mentioned Honda was like this for a while before they realized it was costing them.

The only Japanese make that doesn't have an arrogant tone to their ads is Nissan. They just want to sell you a good, sensible car. Honda and Toyota want you to believe that their cars are from on high.

While, I do agree with you on Nissan. Honda has backed down from that mentality in recent years. Their ad campaigns mention reliability sure, but not in the same degree they did in the late 1990s. I remember their old ads for the Civic which basically were saying "BUY THIS. IT NEVER FAILS"

Well won't be the first time. I'm sure the minions of the golden T will swoop down upon me in Camrys and Prius. They will hook my testicles to thy Prius battery and shock me till admit that the great Yota does no wrong and is forever running. The only thing I can do is hope the battery life on the Prius is as bad I think. So sayeth the Highlander so sayeth the Corolla.

As a side note...

Sam knows this, but I've been a World of Warcraft (World of Gaycraft as he calls it. ) for almost 6 years.

Toyota got permission to use some of the rendering software and models to make a commercial a few years ago. About the same time South Park did an entire episode using the models and software.
