So you're saying it beat the hell out of a domestic car?

You know, it could actually if they made a few quality control changes.

However, we did start the fire on that. After the PRC allowed foreign interest in its industries, AMC started a joint venture with the "Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Corp" in 1983.

I had a '98 Tacoma, the frame rotted out which kind of sucked, but toyota bought it back for 4 times what I paid for it. It surprised me that this recall / buyback didn't get the press coverage that the american car mfg get. I would probably buy another toyota, minus the frame thing it was a good car.

The joint venture still lives (with Chrysler) though.

What I am trying to say is that it started a frenzy of US/European manufactures created partnerships with Chinese makers. Your beloved Volkswagen for example, its Chinese division is a partnership between Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation and First Automobile Works.

why would you turn the car off before coasting into a parking space?

Do you drive into the spot, wait, then turn off the car?

I've usually shut the car off, and out before the other guy has even turned off his car. I'm not in a rush, I just don't see the point in wasting time.

You know the whole fuel saving thing. It's minuscule at the time, but over 60 years of driving, how much will I save? Don't know. But it's something.

I coast (turning off the car) almost anywhere I can, into my driveway, into parking spots. I only do it where I know I'm safe.

I'll also be in neutral as much as I can (while maintaining the speed limit) going down hills and such.

I do like going fast, but I like saving my money better.

It may seem minimal, but think about what I do. I know how my car will handle without power steering, brakes, etc. I know how far I can go, heck in the winter I'll get up to around 20km/h and slam on the brakes to see how bad it really is.

I know how my cars handle under poor conditions and dangerous circumstances.

Preparation and knowledge will save your life many more times than just hoping it'll come out right when all goes to shit.

If you want well built and reliable buy a toyota or nissan or honda. if you want fun and interesting engineering buy a european, if you want a boring outdated car buy a domestic

You've obviously never owned a toyota/nissan for an extended period of time. The only reliable cars from japan are the hondas which can run for 20,000 miles without oil.

And my suburban is a lot more fun an interesting than a MK-anything golf/rabbit/jetta. Your opinions may be accepted on the 'tex, but if you're going to share them with other people in other places, you actually have to back them up. which you can't. VAG is a joke among european car owners. The only innovative, fun, and interesting engineering ever to come out of the modern VW is the MKIV R32. Everything else is just an econobox to compete with lexus.

American cars are hit and miss, however I can guarantee you that my suburban has better craftsmanship than a toyota or a nissan. Maybe not a honda, but that's ok with me.

I can agree on that. I would go further and say that Toyota's only truely reliable car is the Hi-Lux.

What do you base that on?
Toyota's quality and reliability rankings have been top notch for many many years. Yes there have been a few dips along the way in certain lines, but overall they have led the pack for a long time in a wide range of classes

Except for sludging engines, rusting frames, and sticking throttles, they've been reliable.

I had the throttle stick wide open on my '76 Nova. When I finally got the car back under control I had accelerated to 80 KM/h. That was not a pleasant experience. Not to mention the speeding ticket I got that day although the cop took it down to doing 60 in a 50 zone.

However, I was glad I didn't get into an accident and that he didn't add "Operating an unsafe vehicle". And yes, I got it fixed.

Don't you guys know. All them overseas cars are goodens. Why look at how reliable the old MG and Triumphs wer.... Wait. Well look at the Yugo. Um no. Well the French certaintly make wonderful vehicles. Technology tends to be come more unreliable the more complicated it gets. American cars are simple, that's not really a bad thing.
