| | | All the photos on this site are just awesome. But this one that shows DJCraig reduced to a few pixels is ... there are no words! Blew me away when TheApplesnail showed me this on his digital camera and then zoomed out. You couldn't even tell he was there. I like the way you edited this DJ. The second photo looks like a fisheye shot because you can see the whole tower base in a single shot.

| | | Posted by Rankine Cycle Well, I just found out that these were to be 1,200 meg units, not 900 meg like I originally thought.... So this tower could in fact be 500 feet tall ! ... stay tuned, searching for more info right now......

The design had four reactors in pairs. Each reactor just under 1250 MW giving a total of 5000 MW or 5 GigaWatts! Each pair used a single cooling tower by the look of it. So the tower would be built for 2500 MW. Does that make a difference to your estimate?

No, each pair had two towers, so it was one tower per 1,200 MW. I havent had time to look into it further (outage at my plant...) but I would say that tower is indeed right around 500 feet.

| | | My estimates of the height were getting ridiculous so I created a separate post about calculating heights: http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=72621 Correcting for a 30 degree camera angle I get 600 feet instead of 400 without any correction. In reality I think it is likely to be between 500 and 600 feet.

| | | Oh, and by the way, in regards to the height of the cooling tower... From Google Earth, i found that the tower is almost exactly 300 feet in diameter at the top.
Now, from the ground, it would seem that the tower is at least twice as tall as it is wide, but that is clearly not true, unless it broke the record for the largest nuclear plant cooling tower (600 ft).
evan-e-cent had spoken of this parallax, so he may know how to account for it. I currently don't wanna think too hard, cuz i have a headache. He also mentioned a method of measuring the height of something by using shadow comparison. The satellite photos from Google Earth appear to be around early morning, so they could easily be used to help calculate the height. If anyone that has been to this site can remember a fairly accurate estimate of the height of the walls on the west side of the reactor building, or has any photos with people against the walls with which we could estimate the height, please post! Those would give us a definite height to compare the shadow length to, which would let us calculate the tower height. [last edit 9/26/2009 11:09 PM by Mr Blue - edited 1 times]

| | | The St. Louis Aeronautical Chart, which covers the area, lists the cooling tower as 540 feet AGL. That comes straight from the FAA.
