| | | I wasn't sur if I had to post it here on in the photography forum. anyway if you get caught during one of your exploration, does the cops or the owner of the place(or whoever) have the right to delete all the pictures you took on your camera, or just take the camera with him?

| | | To be perfectly frank, I don't think they can do either of those things - legally. I think the police need a warrant to take your belongings, and there's no way the property owner can take your things/delete your pictures. C.

That's more or less correct. If they want to take possession of your camera for any reason, they'll need to arrest you, in which case you'll have your personal belongings removed from you anyways (at least for the time being). In this case they'll actually want to keep your pictures for possible use as evidence against you proving that you were actually there. Only in the rarest cases (active military installations, for example) would your pictures be deleted, in which case that will be one of the least of your concerns. EDIT: Spelling. | | | Someone posted on here a while back about having their pictures deleted by VA hospital cops -- they claimed that his taking pictures of the outside of the hospital breached patient privacy laws. This is a pretty extreme situation, though. If I got caught and the choice was between getting a big ole fine and/or arrested, or having my pictures deleted/film exposed, I'd take the latter. You can always go back later, and getting a record would suck much worse than losing the pictures.

Good point there -- I suppose you could always be offered a deal rather than having an officer go through the hassle of arresting you (or having a security guard call one to do it for him). I think I'd take it too.

| | | In a pinch where you know an encounter with security, locals, etc. is inevitable, you can often times delete the pictures yourself and have an empty camera, or just leave some innovent pictures. Data recovery software can almost always recover "deleted" pictures from a card. This works pretty well with my Canon A70 which uses compact flash. I have heard that some cameras overwrite a picture with zeros when it is deleted on the camera, which would obviously make any sort of recovery impossible. Try it with some pictures you don't care about before you risk ones you want to keep. It should also be common sense that once you have deleted the pictures, it would be a very bad idea to take more pictures on that card, because this would probably overwrite some of that orphaned data that you'll be wanting later.

| | | While working a contract job at Conoco-Phillips in Billings, Montana, a couple of high schools were arrested and their camera equipment was taken from them. They were journalism/photography class kids who were doing a project for school. Seeing as Conoco-Phillips is a major oil refinery in the Billings area and all this 9-11 stuff is still in everyone's minds.. security called the police and followed the kids until the police arrived to arrest them. As said, the camera was confiscated and the film destroyed because of the fact that pictures were taken (from the outside) of a sensitive installation... So, yes, they can take your film (the cops) under the guise of national security (not sure how this would work with an abandoned warehouse).

| | | Was the high schoolers' photographic equipment returned unharmed (minus the film)? or was it kept for some reason? If it was returned, was it done on the spot, or did it take a month or two?

Are you still mad about that? I agree that deleting pics, and recovering them later is a great option if you know it works. I know I can do it on my camera, but have never had a reason to.

For a while, I was afraid the thing would be obsolete by the time they got around to returning it. The rest of the world would be using integrated nanoimaging devices that interface with their eyes, and I would be the dork with the old fashioned digital camera. I guess it only took about a month, but it is still a long time to wait when you know your $500 of photographic equipment is in a paper bag on the shelf in some property room, just waiting to be given to the wrong guy or thrown out by some clerical error.

| | | I've had pictures deleted, and not even while exploring... it was at a sci-fi con; the convention center was connected to a federal building via skywalk, and a few costumed people, myself included , wandered over there to take photos of each other. We were stopped by security, and those of us with digital cameras were asked to delete the photos taken inside the federal building, though the people with film cameras were just warned not to post the photos online. Then they escorted us back to the convention center. When I checked back a few hours later, the skywalk was locked up. In general the security guys were pretty nice about it, though since most of us were dressed as Klingons, it was fairly obvious that we were with the convention. (*sigh* i'm such a nerd)

I hope they also wiped the minds of these dastardly miscreants since from outside the place they could also see everything they were taking pictures of...

| | | During last years big blackout I spent the evening walking around downtown Ottawa taking pictures of the darkened buildings and streets. As I was framing a picture of some potted plants in a 3rd floor window of a large office tower (the plants were backlit by the emergency lighting) I was approached by a security guard. He gruffly told me that I was not allowed to take pictures there (I was standing on the sidewalk). Then he informed me that he had to see all of the pictures I had taken. Since I was sure that he was full of BS I just looked straight at him and said "no". I think that shocked him because he just stared blankly at me for a moment before telling me to "move along then". Rather than cause a kafuffle I just went across the street. However, if I had not been with my wife I might have opted to stay and challenge his assertion that I was not “allowed” taking pictures from a public sidewalk. Hmmmm… Maybe those were "his" "pot"ted plants! [last edit 4/1/2004 3:09 PM by Detroit - edited 2 times]

It contains all the federal offices in the city of Milwaukee... I don't know what's so special about it, but we were on the highest floor that you didn't need a security key to get to. It's possible that we may have been near the FBI field office, though.
