Arsonists hit The Farm

It seems as though "The Farm" has been hit by arson today. I saw it on the evening news, and RustyMeathook and I were in total shock and dismay. I have been searching effortlessly since to find a link to the story, but nothing has been published on the web yet. Maybe tomorrow, or maybe someone else will have better luck.

Why must people be so stupid? I know the place had no floors as it was, but its clearly a landmark to this forum, and its sad to see any abandonment ruined.

I don't know about anyone else, but we've noticed that urban exploring and/or abandoned buildings have been in the media's attention a lot lately, and I worry that things are going to get a lot harder for those of us who just want to enjoy our undestructive pastime.

Anyway, if anyone can find a link to The Farm Fire story, I'm sure others would like to see it. It was on the local Kitchener CTV news this evening. Not on their website yet, and nothing on The Record's newspaper website.

Down with vandals!

That's too bad, but it's not a surprise.

I wouldn't put it past the developers, who would want to avoid any sort of heritage designation for this c. 1849 house that lies on a large chunk of land in the middle of suburbia.

From recent photos, it was severely trashed. Once the floor thieves get to old houses, the place loses much of its charm. In my opinion, floor thieves are worse than vandals and scrappers. I suppose they are a form of scrapper. In addition to the floors, they often steal trim, banisters and other unique features of a house. There was an old farm house on Plains Rd. in Kitchener that had been visited by floor thieves before I got there.

There was a fire in Cambridge last night according to CTV News. Nothing on the newswire about The Farm though.

As Alice Cooper said so famously, "School's out for summer".

Yes, Sunday morning around 4am when we were coming back into town, we drove near the scene in Cambridge where there was a huge fire. An abandoned parking lot that was full of dry skids, was set ablaze.

But on this evening's news, they mentioned that fire, and then did a "on another note" kinda thing, and showed a shot of firefighters, and a very clear, distinguishable shot of "The Farm" on the side of the building (of course, letters were missing). It was clear as day.

I'm also not surprised. But I still can't get over it, and it breaks my heart a little each time. I am mostly just angered at the sheer immaturity and ignorance of some people (teenagers, as you said, school's out for summer), I guess because I was never like that when I was a teen myself. So I just don't understand it, and it infuriates me.

I guess my future kids better watch out when they become teens, they will feel Mommy's wrath!

The fire in Cambridge was right beside Joy Manufacturing, which is in the LDB. They mentioned that Joy is being demolished. The video shows firemen going in and out of Joy.

CKCO News Video

There have been several fires at Joy over the last year and a half.

This is all I can find about The Farm so far.

http://news.therec...ews/article/561928

Pathetic little write up, I know.

And yeah, I noticed about the place in Cambridge too, which was the day before this one. I'm being imaginative by saying, but I hope this isn't going to turn into a series of abandoned location fires. You never know who is pissed off or jealous out there.

*spins some crazy adventure story in head*

....soooo the kind of stuff that one would find in those antique & reclamation stores? interesting....

What do you mean "floors"? Are they really ripping up hardwood floors and stealing it?

YES! My parents live in Grey County and there is a ton of abandoned stuff up there,it is an explorers playground. They do take the floors as well.I know a certain antique dealer (around here) and I found out he was a scrapper as well.Getting old doors and knobs etc. This is off topic but here is my conversation with him. When I was buying stuff from him, I had NO idea.

"So done any exploring lately (I showed him a couple of pictures before)"

Me "Yeah some, not much a lot of stuff is getting burned down or trashed, it is slim pickings"

Him "I just sent some scrappers to one to get some doors and handles,we took some floor boards too."

Me "Wow, thats how you got all this stuff"

Him "I used to buy it, but no one owns these houses any more, so why not"

Me "Okay have a nice day"

I must be the most naive person on the freaking planet.Sure I knew that people took things like doorknobs or barnboard.I had NO idea that they paid scrappers so that people in muskoka could have antique coffee tables.Who knew. It is sad.

They are cutting the hardwood and removing it. Usually the wider hardwood.
