The red door on the upper battery is a Coast Guard door leading to the electrical controls for the unmanned radar tower attached to the mock communications mast on the island.

I was working there-for Parks Canada- for 3 straight days and saw all of the island (even the deer that swam out there the previous week). The side tunnels some of you "slipped" off into are dead ends and just lead to the remains of cartridge lift systems to provide the upper batteries with shells and powder.

Security is usually pretty tight, and they are stringent about getting into the tunnels when not on a tour because it is a pain in the ass to only have 15 minutes to give a guided tour and have to wait to have people clear out of the room you are in or get in your way. We just wanted the most amount of people possible to see the island, letting people free-roam in the tunnels which is the most interesting part creates traffic problems.

I fantasize about some mystical tunnel that goes from here to the mainland too, even though the BIO conducted seismic reflection tests a few years back and showed that there is nothing under the ocean floor whatsoever.

Fun weekend just the same, and a cool island.

It was announced on CTV News a couple weeks ago that the island will be open to the public again next year around the same time. More work will be done in the between time so that when the isle is open again, there will be more to explore.

I get the impression that they might mean open ... all the time. Like McNabs is, maybe?

I would certainly hope they mean that. Maybe Redbeard will take us, lol.
