| | Heading East < on 5/31/2009 4:48 AM >
| | | Okay I'm gonna stop playing cowboy in the socal deserts and come home to the D.C. area for most of the month of June. Even though I've lived in LA for the past 10 years I've always been biased toward to area I grew my roots. I started exploring in Silver Spring, MD with drains and the Forest Glenn Seminary. Recently, it's been tons of old mines and ghost towns out here in the west. I know it's not technically in the region but rented a car during the holidays and did Pennhurst in pennsylvania. Blown away. So what is this long winded intro leading up to? Big surprise. I'd love someone to help show me some of the sites I've missed since crossing the states. I want to see old factories covered in ivy, mines hundreds, not decades of years old and the quickly vanishing asylums. I'll gladly travel long distances and will return any and all favors when you come out west. Hoping to meet some generous explorers that we all envy in cali. Cheers.

Most of the places I go around here wind up on my flickr page. What's your favorite flavor to explore?

Hmmmm, surprisingly I don't think I've ever been asked that? Places with historic character I suppose. I think US drains are my least favorite. Enjoy them but go overseas and now we're talking. Structure that were built (not necessarily abandoned) in the last 50 years don't do much for me. graffiti throws me off big time for I think it ruins the persona of the location. I love mining, machinery, bricks (we don't have any in LA due to earthquakes), asylums, hospitals...I'm not opposed to much at all covered by these forums now that I think about it. Hell, I'll even be doing a video on old light houses. Cliche but I still enjoy it.

Well, take a gander at my sets, but with all the renovations that go on in my town I'm afraid that much of I've found of what's in my part of NC isn't what you're after.

| | | If you want to head down to Richmond, I would be happy to show you around. I can't offer you places without graffiti tho. They just don't exist. Staunton is only a couple hours from here as well.

| | | AnAppleSnail: I looked through your whole set. Just amazing. What a collection. I had said drains were probably my least favorite but I'm realizing I've only been to a few and they were all 1 mile of strait as an arrow piping. I hike miles to explore mines that are essentially the same thing as some of the stuff you've come across BUT just hundreds of feet deep. PorkChopExpress: Thank you for the invite. I'd love to come on down. A day on the weekend of the 13th work? Katetron: Hell, lets make a weekend of it. [last edit 5/31/2009 10:01 PM by robk700 - edited 1 times]

Sounds good to me. I leave tomorrow for my Grandmother's funeral, but I should be back by the end of the week. I will PM you my phone number.

If this isn't a Monday or Tuesday I'm down, unless I lose the ability to drive. PCE, do you have my contact info so I'll know when to head up thataways? And you guys just get in touch when you're headed here to Raleigh and I can bring you to the stuff I know here.

| | | So this is what I propose. Just an idea. Nothing more. I come down to VG and meet some of you guys Friday night and do some exploring through the night and next day. I can camp someplace or find a cheap hotel. Then I can go down to NC Sunday. I'll be able to rent a 4x4 SUV if need be to visit some remote locations. Willing to drive anyone anywhere but be warned: horrible navigating east cost bicycle wheel grids.

| | | I'm on a road trip around the country right now too and I'd love to meet up with you if our paths cross! I'm meeting up with friends and explorers in most of the cities I'm going to, and the cities where I have none, I'm doing database locations and searching for my own stuff. I'm in Philadelphia right now. In a few days I'm heading up to Detroit, then Chicago. I'll definitely be at these meetups: http://www.uer.ca/...nt.asp?eventid=402 (Kansas City, July 18th) http://www.uer.ca/...nt.asp?eventid=401 (NC and TN the weekend of August 7th) You should definitely come to those! Anyway, I'm keeping my plans and location for this road trip up to date on this thread: http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=60232 I'm also posting information regularly on Facebook: http://www.faceboo...210050&ref=profile And my current location is always available on Loopt: https://app.loopt....-911a-c96b6517bce9 One of the major things I'm wanting to do this summer is explore in New Orleans. Six Flags New Orleans is abandoned! http://en.wikipedi..._Flags_New_Orleans So I'll be down there sometime within a week or two after the July 18th meetup. Let me know (PM me) if you'd like to meet me there, or anywhere else on my road trip!

| | | This still happening? I just found out I don't have to work this weekend and I would love to see what Richmond has to offer, that is if you wouldn't mind too much. I know there is quite a bit of historical sites there. And I heard of a tunnel system and I'd love to try being a tunnel rat (never found myself in a tunnel, so it would be my first).
Well...... crap........ |

I don't know. I haven't heard from Robk, and I have to pick up my father from the hospital tomorrow. He was rushed in Monday and he now has a pace maker. I'm pretty sure I will need to help my Mom with him. However, I may be able to break away for a bit. The tunnel system is a no-no. It is still used by the state and city for a number of things (including transferring prisoners from the court house to MCV). If you are caught down there your screwed.
