Bunkers

Sketch map of the Anzac bunkers to approximate scale

UA City World MapOne of the easiest to access bunkers in UA City is the Anzac bunkers. It is also located right behind a gun range though, so should only be visited with permission. It was in this area that the movie Mission Impossible 2 was filmed.

10th July 2002. It was pointed out on a news group a few days ago that the official name of this location is not 'Anzac Bunkers'. No shit Sherlock. As explained in the email and information sections of this web site I rarely use the official names of sites I visit in order to reduce the chances of people visiting and vandalizing them. And to Mr Mark Newton, I do know about coastal batteries, much more than you might expect.

Though not as big as some of the bunkers in the north of UA City the complex features a watch tower and two gun emplacements in addition to some tunnels and ammo rooms. I was running out of image space when I finally made it to the bunkers so could not take as many pictures as I would have liked.

The bunkers are on the same point that just happens to be where a deep sea sewage discharge is located, on the cliffs on the point two brick structures are located that look like miniature brick veneer flats. Don’t enter them, you can tell by the smell what they are

Rooms near the base of the watch tower

The old operations center rooms as shown in picture above

Trench with bridge over top, and tower above buildings on right.

View out of the tower window Azimuth and bearing equipment is missing

Entrance to the tunnels. At some time they were burnt out

An old chair and water cooler sit inside the entrance

Gun emplacement 1. Stairs lead up to the gun while a passage continues on to the ammo room

Looking out the gun emplacement

Looking back. Shells an ammunition would have been stored where the shelves are, behind baffles to prevent explosion. The ammo lift is on the extreme right, a small hole in the ground.

Base of the Ammo Lift. When in operation the door above would be sealed and ammunition loaded to the gun via this lift. If the emplacement was hit the narrow trap door would prevent a chain reaction explosion. In addition, the shells were very heavy.

Looking up to the stairs from the ammo room.

Offices from the other passageway, the entrance door and rails in the ground can just be seen.
