Fall 2008 Trip

Fine trip to the island on Sunday, October 19, 2008. Clear skies for the majority of the day and air temperature in high single digits. Overcast sky and increased wind as afternoon turned into evening.

Island houses were open. Friends of McNabs Island Society was active on the island throughout the day. One of their members said they expected well over one hundred people on the island that day.

We traveled to the island via Taylor Made Tours, operated by Steven Taylor. He's located at 1425 Main Rd, Eastern Passage, NS. $10 per person for the round trip.

We landed at Back Cove at 9:25am.

Walked from there to Fort McNab. Set foot in the first building we encountered at 9:30am.

From Fort McNab we walked to the cemetery, and then to Strawberry Battery via Garrison Road and the McNabs Pond Trail.

We backtrack back the McNabs Pond Trail to Garrison Road where were proceeded toward the Teahouse before veering right at Detention Barrack Road. Detention Barrack Road led us up a very steep hill and eventually the path fizzled out and the group was stuck trudging through thick brush.

Eventually, we made our way to the Teahouse where we took a break for a light snack. From the Teahouse, we began following Garrison Road again passing Hugonin Battery where we found Forsythe Street which lead us to Fort Ives.

From Fort Ives, we followed Old Military Road past the houses of McNabs Island, through to it's intersection with Garrison Road, which we again followed back to Back Cove where we used a cellphone to arrange for Taylor Made to pluck us from the island after examining some of the scuttled ships wrecked along the shoreline.

I found a kick-ass flashlight on the grounds of Fort McNab and beach-combed myself a handy yellow hardhat!
