"New Look for Bulova Factory"

This article apppeared in the East Hampton Star on March 17th, 2005. I went to www.easthamptonstar.com to get a link to the article but their site isnt that well built up and they dont have all their articles online....so I thought id type out the article.

New Look for Bulova Factory

"Its just local kids," said a woman walking herdog on Church Street in Sag Harbor. She was talking about graffiti on the abandoned Bulova Watchcase Factory building.

But Joe Schembri, a furniture restorer whos shop faces the tall, irregularly shaped red brick building, said that in the last four weeks the colorful graphic markings have multiplied. He called the police, who, Sag Harbor Village Mayor Ed Deyermond said, are investigating. Tom Fabiano, chief of police, would not comment.

From Church Street two instances of the same cypher-like markings can be seen, spray-painted on the building, one near its top, which the graffiti painter could have reached by the fire escape stairwell. Three white flag-like rectangles are arrayed around a line drawing that resembles the sun rising on the horizon.

"It's city idiots," said Mr. Schembri. "Kids who have moved here from the city, seen this building as unmarked, and now local kids are gettin into it. How else do you explain for 30 years there has been no graffiti and all of the sudden it's here?"

From the adjacent public parking, you can see the letters "EOSER." written ;large, then duplicated in smaller letters. Not far form there, painted on a truck trailer, there appears another large colorful abstract pattern. Graffiti that apprears on a nearby retaining wall has been there for years, according to Mr. Schembri.

A spokesman for Malloy Enterprises, which owns the Bulova building, would not comment.

Now after i read this article i was at my summer/winter house in long island and took the 20 min drive to go see this new graffiti and to see if i can talk to this Mr. Schembri who blammed graffiti on "city idiots"...now im from queens ny...spent 4 years of high school in manhatten...and def took offense to him blamming this on "city idiots." I took pictures which are up in the new gallery...and went across the street to talk to Mr. Schembri. First of all hes a hypocrite (sp?) because he was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and he kept on sayin "now comon how much graffiti is in new york? After 9/11 so many families moved out here etc"....first of all hes a "city idiot" himself b/c he is the type he was talkig about...the type that moved from the city out to the island. He also told me that he was a substitute teacher for a long time and he says its obvious that older kids influence the younger kids...and when the younger kids see the older kids from the city who moved here doing graffiti etc they will copy them. First of a good 90% of the kids in the town of Sag Harbor Skateboard. They were tryin to fight to turn Bulova into a skate park or at least the empty parking lot into a skatepark but it never worked. Now whats the largly associated with skateboarding?? Graffiti! Yes maybe these younger kids have seen older kids do graffiti and im just not aware of it...but kids arnt stupid. Graffiti is all over. Its in magazines(especially skateboarind magazines, 1/2 of the adertisements have their graphics in "graffiti font"), TV, the internet etc. We had a good debate for a 1/2 hour or so and he was so0o0o0o stubborn. I also looked into the new graffiti. In the gallery Bulova 2 that i created you can see sum images of the graffiti wall that they talked about behind bulova. I wasnt able to get up close to it b/c the empty parkin lot was gated up..but now they turned that into public parking and NOBODY parks there btw lol. So i parked in the public parking lot and walked over ot the wall...and looked at hte new graffiti...the graffiti on the wall that the guy said has bene their for years....is the same exact tag/has al lthe same designs as the new graffiti. The tag on the empty trailor says "ASKO" in a very abstract way. The graffiti on the wall in the parking lot...has those same designs and has the tag "asko" written all over the wall. The place where they were ytalking about that said "EOSER" was done by the same person bc another design/tag was writtin right next to it with the same exact colors as the "eoser" had....it has the same writting style and everything. These arnt new kids being influenced by "city idiots"...these are the same kids who had done this yearsssssssss ago. This guy is just stirring up unnecessary drama..

ok my little rant is done and over with lol!
