People who trespass on the railways could be termed as idiots though too. Train comes, you trip on track... what do you do then?

True, but most people keep well away from the tracks. In our case, we make a mini-database of train times for that day, to avoid trains. The drivers can very easily radio the transport police!

Rail tracks fair enough, but railway property? I made the mistake of looking for a point of entry into a derelict distillery on railway property and got threatened with arrest. Walking away and calmly explaining that there's no trespassing laws in Scotland and I wasn't causing a disturbance to the (English) rail employee worked a charm though.

In the Netherlands they have a far worse thing than arrest: they charge you with losses of driving 5km/h. When you do that on a busy strech, they can charge you with EUR 1.000.000.

I though the £2000 fine over here was bad!

Yep. They did that once with a guy who entered the Willemsspoortunnel (Rotterdam). He was in there for 20 minutes and about 20 trains had a delay. They charged him bigtime, but I don't know the actual outcome.

BTW the normal charges in NL are: EUR 25 for walking on or next to the tracks, EUR 50 for biking and EUR 65 for walking a dog.

Thing is, I walk on the tracks and they charge me €1,000,000 - there is no way in hell that i'll ever be able to repay them that amount of money. Just silly.

Over a lifetime? Maybe the EUR1,000,000 fine is for companies who disrupt the rail traffic as opposed to individuals.
