You forgot to mention the plunger, in case the sink became clogged no doubt.

Yes, i failed to mention the obvious. The sink became plugged and was most likely not un-plugged and abandoned. Later they decided to cut their loss' and just close down the place rather than fixing the sink.

a plumber costs a half a years pay to unclog a drain so it was a smart move

Sometimes it needed chemicals to get through it
