All the ironwork doors (except the basement bar one) were stolen since this photo was taken. :-(

Don't get me wrong, I don't side with the vandals and taggers and punks who smash every piece of glass they can find. I do't condone the wonton destruction of abandoned buildings by gangs of merauding youths who are bored and have nothing better to do. To me, a just punishment for vandals, if caught, would be to have to go back and clean up the damage and mess they've caused.
But if people are stripping away all of the fixtures and iron work, knowing that if the building is to be torn down and these items will end up in a landfill, then I can't say that I blame them for removing anything salvageable.
It's a comment I've made before, to me it's a victimeless crime and if it keeps these guys from going out and mugging someone to survive, then honestly speaking, if all they're doing is removing fixtures and anything salvageable, more power to them.

I think you raise a valid point... and from a more romantic point of view, some of the building survives this way.
I still can't help but feel bitter about a building I know and love being in such a horrible state.

Yeah, and they actually save natural resources by stealing those things.
I wonder if scavengers are more professionals, or that they're mostly just people driving by who know someone is building a house. I gamble on professionals.

They're pretty well-equipped to remove heavy machinery as well as doors and fixtures. My money's on them being professionals too.

I agree and intend to extend the idea to money and electrical goods!

In Gent we met professional cable strippers. Nearly all abandonments would have plastic cable insulation cut in a very distinct way on the floor. In some places the power was even on...

Bastards! After this location and Lennox Castle, I have a special hatred for these people.

I've a mind to hide in this abandonment one day to wait for people to come round. Then I can jump out of one of those weird Lovecraftian corners and scare the living daylights out of them.
