5 / 5   Tahawus-loading-hoppers-Shaughnessy.jpg

Description
this was taken in front of the sinter plant (the building with the holes punched in it)... the material coming out of the chutes was so hot that it would blister the paint on the D&H cars used on the line. If you zoom in on the D&H logo on the right hand car, you can see the paint blistering.

This photo is featured in a 1950's issue of Trains Magazine. The building was partially demolished a few years ago, but they quit after only a small amount of work was done (mostly some of the hoppers were removed and a few walls were blasted out). Be very carefull in this building as the floors in the left end are unstable and there is a large quantity of water in the lower level. Does anyone know details about the underground water system that helped cool this building? One of the collector drains is near the left end of the building.

otetiani is not kidding... the entire lower floor is flooded... nasty green water and there are 'holes' in the floor that hide in the dark... be careful in the east end (nearest the conveyor) of this building. Also, the stairs have been removed for the topmost levels.

They gave up on the demo; It looks like 1945 Berlin.
I've never felt unsafe in a building with concrete floors. But this one; Wow!
