Never seen a water tower shaped like that, maybe because they dont have them here in the states.

I know what you mean... I'd think it's bad practice to build them in any shape other than cylindrical, but it's probably faster to build those.
This is one of only two non-cylindrical water towers (I know of) in Athens. There are dozens of the more traditional variety, many disused.
