  Those room were a key to tuberculosis cure before the antibiotic: patient would be place in the sun and window would be open for them to breath the fresh air of the mountain.

  This was sometimes called Spiro-Vent Therapy or 'the swiss method'. The other side of this treatment was LOTS of wholesome food / fruit and plenty of fresh milk.

Lactose intolerance was not well understood at the time and a lot of people got very sick from being constantly fed milk.
