Someone tried to combine two units into one and did it badly. This excellent example of a fireplace isn't to fire code no mater where you live in the world. That is the chimney passing through drywall and it travels horizontally for half the width of the building before emptying into a room. Great for smoking out the roaches, but not to good for human lungs.

I thought it was interesting that the balcony had been rebuilt on the front of this building as well, the person who did all this work obviously had issues with structual priorities!
