Judging by the hair styles this photo is from around 88-92.

I think it's actually a little bit older than that, and I only say that because I'm pretty sure that his wife died in the early/mid 80s. Later this week I'm going to meet with my girlfriends grandmother, who saw Fred every day when he'd come over and ask for apples to feed his horse. I'll let you know what she has to say.

Just an update, I was able to obtain a copy of his obituary, and I will be in touch with my girlfriends grandmother to find out more. I am going to move the discussion of his death and living situation in general to a thread.

Holy christ this is no old man! In this photo the guy is tops 50 years old! Add 20 years to that and he was seventy if he died last year. I thought this was some crazy old hermit in his eighties. Wow! I thank God for what I have now because this could be me. You know you said something about dying with money. I worry about money every day. But some folks never worry about it and die lonely anyway.

I may have to find out more about his military service now because my calculations would have made him over 80. Some of my specifics are inconsistent, and I apologize but most of what I know is word-of-mouth. The obituary will clear most of this up hopefully, and then I will modify what I had previously written where appropriate.

Are we entirely sure the the person shown sitting in the front of this portriat is female? Perhaps this could be the mystery son. It is hard to tell from the clothes. I do know that there was boys in my school in the 80's that had hairstyles not too far off from that "mullet" type look. I could be wrong though....?

We think you could be right there, isn't that an adams apple ??? The clothes would fit right in with the "Miami Vice" era (pinks and blues) and the hair style is definately like a "mullet"

I'll take a look at the photo again up close, and look for more photos again the next time I visit. In all honesty, I really doubt that this is a boy pictured here. In the earlier photo located in the bathroom, of what appears to be the same child, one can observe that the infant had long hair and wore a sundress. I would presume that only a girl would be raised in such a manner from such a young age. As always, the investigation continues...

The woman on the left looks too young to be his wife; perhaps a younger sister with her two daughters ore daughter and androgenous other daughter / son?

Sorry to be coming in so late to this, but had to say this IS the best posting I have seen. Exquisite prose and the photos are very well done. My prayers to the family (those that are left) and those who knew Mr. Salomon. And if you ever find those who trespassed and trashed the house, perform grievous harm upon them in the form of karma for this violation.

I think this pic is definatley dated from the early 90's. it really can't be earlier than that. This was also the tone that was widely used in Fuji stock, in the earlier 90's, giving it that greenish tint to the film. The picture of the picture is obviously digital; and has a warm tint to it, which means more than likely, this didn't effect the picture of Fred and family. What do you think? I'd say he could definatly be in his 60's (early of course) aging well?

Well this photo couldn't have dated past the mid-80s since his wife is pictured. Digital photography wasn't really prevalent then, nor was it in the early 90s.
Looking at this photo again though, clearly the girl sitting front and center is an older version of the girl in the portrait earlier in the gallery. Good eye. Still no idea who she could be, though.

Your galery is nice , but I think all of this , posting the life of an old man that probably didnt have a great life after is wife death , is a kind of disrescpect for im ... Yeah I know , he's dead right now , i just dont know all of this , but its also a great disrecpect for all is family .... that just MY opinion ...

As has been posted in the thread associated with this location, there is no disrespect intended here. I think INA was trying to document the man's life and see that his story (sad as it may be) lived on through technology, something that Fred seemed to spend a lot of life involved with.

The pictured gentleman looks to be in his late 50's. With the hair and clothing style on the rest screaming early 1980's Miami Vice, Fred would be in his late 70's which hewas hen he died at 79. The younger one in the pink an blue is a male, and is familial to the big haired female, same facial structures and measurements. The older female shares facial features with none right off the first look. Who they are I dont know. Perhaps son and niece? They both share features to Fred. Drooping outer eye fold, upper hard nose bridges and brow ridges, and general ovoid faces. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, I just came out of a course in facial reconstruction.

Mutt, you point out a lot that I agree with, but also consider that if they were not in Fred's nuclear family, they very well may have been in his extended family.

This has been quite an extensive look into one mans life. You've got one hell of a gallery here, and it's a shame this place is to be destroyed.
It's also a pity that this man had to wither away like that, and slip into what appears to be total madness. May he find peace in death.

This is one of the only photo galleries that have haunted me since I first saw it so many years ago. FWIW, this has got to be some other family/friend. According to SSDI, Gertrude A Salomon (last known residence Old Tappan) died March 10, 1992 at the age of 75, born in April 1916. She was older than Fred by ~8 years - he was born in January 1924. There is no way the woman in the picture is over 60 and the perm on the girl on the right looks like what every other girl in my class had in 1987-1989ish. Fred died 2 days before his 80th birthday.

I also wanted to chip in! This is one of my fave locations but the emotions and thoughts it stirs up are of immense sadness and anger. Why did the good citizens of the town look after this old chap? Why did he die alone and in squalor?
